He’s phenomenally talented musically - he’s got chops for days - but that’s the least important part of being a good artist IMO.

Being from NJ and growing up in the 70s/80s, I do have a feel for the context. Maybe just enough to see how rotten to the core (but “well done!”) his music is.

Miami 2017 is about watching NYC be destroyed from the safety of a Florida retirement community. Sadly I know all this material too well cuz BJ is maybe the last new artist my dad ever got into. Didn’t have many records in my house growing up but we had all of BJs.

Maybe I’ll watch the doc. Maybe it’s a good film. The music will surely be highly accomplished and “well done” (worst thing you can say about art). I can play “who’s he ripping off now?” Ray Charles? McCartney? Steely Dan? Stones? Leon Russell? Every song 1 degree removed from a single source.

I will dunk on BJ forever & not because he’s unhip. It’s because he’s a very talented serial pastiche artist whose lyrical POV is beyond inane. He is literally the bard of white flight. He gives voice to those who already benefit from everything. Maybe he’s a nice guy, I dunno and I don’t care.

I know a lot of us have feelings about Bandcamp’s changes in ownership over the last few years. But it’s still true that buying music directly from independent labels and artists on Bandcamp remains one of the best ways to support the musicians you listen to.

Those first Ozzy solo records were huge when I was 11, 12 years old & it may not be much reflected in my playing now but they (esp Randy Rhoades) 100% directly influenced my desire to pick up a guitar. Later of course I dug Sabbath, but thx Ozzy for helping me choose a path.
