Earlier this year, we published "Gold Reimagined", spotlighting solutions we’ve supported through the #ASMChallenge. These include innovations in restoration and remediation, monitoring systems, and tools to assess the social and environmental impacts of mining.

This isn’t just a local issue.

Artisanal & small-scale gold mining produces nearly 25% of the world’s gold supply.

Yet when unregulated, it fuels mercury pollution, deforestation & biodiversity loss in some of the planet’s richest ecosystems.

Researchers found the extraction destroyed 4,500 hectares of forest, released 20 kg of mercury, and put 370,000 people at risk of mercury poisoning.

Gold here is "not worth its weight in gold."

A study found that illegal gold mining in Brazil’s Tapajós Basin produced ~7,800 kg of gold in 2020.

But the true cost? $1B in damage, more than twice the value of the gold itself!

Through our #MicrofiberInnovation Challenge (2020-2022), powered by The Flotilla Foundation and The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, we awarded $650,000 in prizes to groundbreaking solutions that tackle microfiber pollution at its source. But our journey didn’t stop there.

Among the most pervasive sources of this pollution are microfibers, tiny synthetic threads that shed from our clothes during washing.
