it’s a cool little theater; only one more showing left on the Herzog too: this coming Wednesday evening.

Frederick Wiseman - rare case where a 96-year-old filmmaker’s death feels tragic because they had so much more left to do. Uninterrupted streak of curiosity, empathy, wisdom, and quiet anger, ended only by the reality of living in a human body.

you can watch racetrack, and many of wiseman's other movies, on kanopy: www.kanopy.com/en/video/212...

also, personal anecdote: I was lucky to see Titicut Follies with him in attendance about 10 years ago, and his very functional, unromantic approach to filmmaking—straightforward about the follies of verite itself—only verified for me that what he did was magic.

many people will put this so much better than me, but: “inimitable” is a word thrown around a lot lately, but Wiseman was literally that: the whole of documentary filmmaking attempted to imitate him, but no one ever really succeeded, they just took what he did and kept going.

Many people may be discovering Frederick Wiseman’s work today, and there is part of me that is envious they will be seeing something like Titicut Follies—or High School, or Welfare, or Hospital, or anything he’s made—for the 1st time, because it will undoubtedly transform how they see all film.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is the stuff of crazed movie magic. The meta misadventure follows Torontonian best friends Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol in their ongoing quest to get their band, Nirvanna the Band, a show at Toronto venue the Rivoli.

Thanks! And Nope! Not at all. All you really need to know is that they have one goal in life: to get a show at the Rivoli. (But even that they basically introduce in the first two minutes.)

Good Morning, Portland: It’s a big weekend for local actions against federal agents, beginning today. Don’t be surprised if your neighborhood coffee shop is closed this morning; many Portland businesses are taking part in a nationwide strike and protest going on Friday and Saturday.
