Mary Seacole has been heralded as the most famous Black British person in history. The U.K. recognizes the month of October as their Black History Month. . . Mary Seacole is usually celebrated because of the African derived healing techniques she practiced in her many adventures. However, she also provides us with a better understanding of the Black Diaspora and migrations during enslavement and Post-Emancipation eras. Mary Seacole, born free, was like many other newly liberated African people in the British West Indies who traveled to Panama to participate in the construction of the Interoceanic railroad funded by the U.S. Mary's movements and entrepreneurial endeavors challenge the notion that only “low-skilled” men traveled to Panama during this time. Mary bought properties and operated hotels on the isthmus.
