We may be contemplating salads, but there is still the temptation to turn on the oven to bake a cake. Stone fruits and berries abound and lift summer bakes to dizzying heights.

Credit us with some intelligence Nic...people may decide not to write for (say) the Telegraph as a personal decision and that's all good, but most of the 'facts' being presented by a noisy few are wildly incorrect

Hi Nic - this is really disappointing as it's not true. I'm a friend who is on the end of the phone had you any questions, and I would always be happy to answer them. Most of the 'research' being presented isn't worthy of an O level, never mind dignifying here.

It flatlines through February, beginning to climb in early March, peaking towards the end of April and staying high until the beginning of September when it declines till the flatline in the middle of October, when all the birds have left for Africa.

It’s unremittingly grey and cold and dank (in London at least). So here’s a thought to keep you going.

In about three or four weeks, the first sand martins will be arriving from Africa. Twelve centimetres long, they’ll have made a journey of up to about 9,000 kilometres. Ridiculous.

For anyone in the Chorleywood area, this is happening soon. Would love to see some of you there.
