We've been lucky enough to receive an early copy of this wonderful book, which we will be discussing with author @markdiacono.bsky.social at @ludlowfood in September.
A review will be coming, but in the meantime why not pre-order your own copy?
Come to Ludlow to hear us in conversation.

The Observer 6th July 2025 open at the page for Nigel Slater's midweek dinner, gooseberry almond pudding and a Sytch farm bowl full of gooseberries
A mise en place scene of whisked egg whites i a glass bowl, a bowl full of ground almonds, flour and icing sugar, a Sytch farm bowl of gooseberries and a Netherton Foundry copper pan containing melted butter
A Netherton Foundry pie dish containing a gooseberry almond pudding, sitting on a linen tabelcloth
A Netherton Foundry 8ยฝ inch cake tin containing a gooseberry and oat cake, recipe from Mark Diacono's book, Sour
Itโs been a berry good summer so far.
And our gooseberries have been glorious, check out our versions of @nigelslater.bsky.social Observer midweek recipe for gooseberry almond pudding and @markdiacono.bsky.social oat & gooseberry cake from his book, SOUR

A blackcurrant cake in a Netherton Foundry cake tin, next to a grey and white striped linen napkin
We grew the blackcurrants, the first year we have gathered more than a handful; we made the cake tin, we baked the cake but the recipe for this stunning blackcurrant yogurt cake is from SOUR, by @markdiacono.bsky.social

A baked cherry and almond batter pudding in a Netherton Foundry cake tin on a wooden surface with a scattering of fresh cherries alongside
A gooseberry and oat cake (recipe from mark Diacono's book, SOUR) on a wooden table with a linen napkin and a handful of raw gooseberries
A raspberry frangipane tart, with one slice removed, in a Netherton Foundry cake tin, with an IOShen knife and a dark blue rumpled napkin
A top down shot of a bright pinked iced cake on a Netherton Foundry baking and serving tray
We may be contemplating salads, but there is still the temptation to turn on the oven to bake a cake. Stone fruits and berries abound and lift summer bakes to dizzying heights.

Marvellous. I fear there's a thread, nay a book, in this sort of thing. A friend used to help is very young daughter put her shoes on while they sang 'You Do Your Buckles Up' to the tune of 'You Do The Hucklebuck'

06.03.2025 12:30 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Credit us with some intelligence Nic...people may decide not to write for (say) the Telegraph as a personal decision and that's all good, but most of the 'facts' being presented by a noisy few are wildly incorrect

Hi Nic - this is really disappointing as it's not true. I'm a friend who is on the end of the phone had you any questions, and I would always be happy to answer them. Most of the 'research' being presented isn't worthy of an O level, never mind dignifying here.

A graph showing the reporting rates of sand martins in Britain. It flatlines through February, beginning to climb in early March, peaking towards the end of April and staying high until the beginning of September when it declines till the flatline in the middle of October, when all the birds have left for Africa.
Itโs unremittingly grey and cold and dank (in London at least). So hereโs a thought to keep you going.
In about three or four weeks, the first sand martins will be arriving from Africa. Twelve centimetres long, theyโll have made a journey of up to about 9,000 kilometres. Ridiculous.

Cartoon of two people sitting together. One is saying "Voulez-vous crochet avec moi ce soir?" while holding some crochet. The other person is smiling benignly.
I hand draw all my cartoons to order, so if you have a friend who loves crochet or an enemy who loathes it, this could be the perfect gift.
