Ugh--incredibly disappointing to see this from a private funder. My nonprofit colleagues and I were talking this morning and we've heard that federal grants will now be only awarded to orgs without a DEI policy. I'm hoping that's more unenforceable fascist bluster, though.

Get wise on the use of coded language—on both sides. For example, environmental groups & federal agencies like the Forest Service may talk about conservation in the context of addressing “extreme weather.” This is a more palatable way of describing conservation for climate change mitigation.

Ignore the sturm und drang—the daily churn of horrors. We know the hits will keep coming, but try not to get overwhelmed by the noise… to the extent possible.

This is mostly just a thread of my thoughts as I attempt to adjust to American authoritarianism, but I hope it is helpful or useful in some way for you too, friends. ❤️

Keep your loved ones close. Take any opportunity you can to remind fascist sympathizers (ie conservatives) the impact of their choices. For any of them with a shred of conscience or decency, this may help them reconsider their loyalties.

Take care of yourself physically. Our healthcare system was fucked long before this, so do what you can to stay healthy and limit the spread of disease. Mask, take your vitamins, etc.

To the extent you’re able, buy produce and meat from local sellers. Take caution when buying these things from factory farms as they will no longer be as heavily regulated for safety and worker protections.

Obviously support local, independent, and international journalism. We can no longer have any faith in mainstream media to report objectively and accurately.

Be wise with your money. Anticipate extreme market volatility and plan accordingly. Consider buying gold or other commodities not tied to market conditions.

Don’t do anything to make life easier for people executing federal orders. You don’t know any illegal immigrants. You don’t know anything about DEI efforts. And fuck the police.

If you can, take a few minutes each day to meditate and calm down your central nervous system.

Support workers and unionization movements, especially ones that protect immigrant workers.

Learn more about life under dictators like Franco and Pinochet, in addition to Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Mao, etc. Learn how people built resilience and maintained shreds of hope under authoritarian regimes.
