The incredible vulnerability that reproduction poses for plant species in a warming world
Crop scientists have long recognized that reproduction is going to be the first point of failure for plants with rising global temperatures. However, this has often been overlooked by those studying natural populations. In this new review, we try to change that. ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...

Graphic announcing new AJB Synthesis article by Haley Branch.
Methodological illustration for asking whether X affects plants. βQuestionβ provides an example of a question that both ecologists and evolutionary biologists ask, with categories of traits often of interest. βExperimentβ shows trait examples and comparisons (populations, environmental, across time). Types of traits are where evolutionary biologists could expand their breadth. βOutcomeβ describes lasting effects of whether X affects traits to the point that it is passed on and contributes to future generations or it leads to extinction. βOutcomesβ is where ecophysiologists could expand their work. Images courtesy of Dr. Stefanie Sultmanis (vein density), Dr. Beatrice Harrison Day (root section), and Dr. Vanessa Tonet (leaf cavitation).

The Prototaxites specimen resting on a mossy floor
21 / 23 This means that the first giant organisms on the Earthβs surface were not closely related to anything alive today. But despite its strangeness, in its time Prototaxites would have had an important role, being eaten by arthropods and having impacts on the ecosystem that we donβt yet know.

Genomic analyses in Drosophila do not support the classic allopatric model of speciation
Abstract. The allopatric model of speciation has dominated our understanding of speciation biology and biogeography since the Modern Synthesis. It is uncon
New paper out: βallopatricβ Drosophila species arenβt so allopatric after all. We show that most currently allopatric species pairs probably overlapped in the past and exchanged genes at levels similar to sympatric pairs. @evolletters.bsky.social

Balanced polymorphism in a floral transcription factor underlies an ancient rhythm of daily sex alternation in avocado
In avocado and certain wild relatives in Lauraceae, pollination occurs via a synchronized rhythm of floral sex timing between two hermaphroditic flowering types. A-type plants present female-phase flo...
Did you know there are 2 types of avocado varieties? A-types switch from female to male, B-types male to female, within a single day. This reciprocal sex alternation promotes cross-pollination and has a simple genetic basis. Read more in this recent preprint from the final chapter of my PhD thesis π₯

I got to think about lots of cool/scary things working on this: (very) rapid adaptation, introgression of structural variants, invasive species, reproductive isolation, pesticide resistance, the precarity of food production. Grateful to have worked on such a big dataset with amazing collaborators

Congrats @jeffgroh.bsky.social et al. Some avocado trees open female-phase flowers in the morning & then male in afternoon. Others show complementary pattern (m->f), to synchronize pollination of two types. Jeff show this to be a >45Mya polymorphism at a transcription factor across 100s of species.
