Republicans saying the new bill benefits the average American is like a restaurant saying they've reduced prices... but they can no longer guarantee they don't use rat meat, you only get 15 minutes to eat, and you have to bring your own cutlery.

One of my favorite moments last year was a visit to DC, and I basically talked my partner's ear off about Grants poor hardscrabble background, his prosecution of the KKK, his willingness to sacrifice for what he thought was morally right, and even his fatal flaw loyal gullibility.

Every so often, as we fight in the trenches of this dumb culture war while also actually trying to save off fascism, I'm reminded of a letter I found in the municipal archives from 1942.

👉 Join your friends and neighbors and DEMAND that Congresswoman Malliotakis explain her vote to make billions in cuts to Medicaid and SNAP so that the rich can get a 4 *trillion* dollar tax cut. Enough is enough.

If they can't do a budget reconciliation, Democrats will block the cuts to Medicaid. So this is Nicole's only way of cutting it.

It's possible the whole thing collapses, but Nicole has made her desire clear: she wants to cut Medicaid and probably a chunk of Medicare too. And she voted to do so.

Why do they need to hit that number? Can't they cut less and not touch Medicaid?

No. Because the bill is a hard requirement. If they cut less, the entire budget fails because Nicole is trying to pass the budget in a sneaky way that won't need debate (called Budget Reconciliation).

And since the demanded cuts are so big, and the things the committee oversees are so few, Medicaid, mathematically, HAS to be cut. It's like a Jenga tower with only a few pulls left. One of them has gotta be Medicaid to hit the number Nicole is demanding.

Nicole demanding people try to use Medicaid *now* as "proof" is dumb, because the cuts will come in a few months, not now.

The law forces the committee to make cuts of a certain amount. But it's vaguely worded precisely so Nicole can claim she didn't cut Medicaid, the GOP committee did.

Facts: no the law doesn't say Medicaid. Because it's a law that forces the committee that *oversees* Medicaid and Medicare to cut spending, so it doesn't need to name the programs. So if Medicaid doesn't see massive cut in a few months, it'd have to be huge cuts to Medicare instead.
