I am thinking specifically of gay people who want kids but treat their homosexuality as an inalienable obstacle to parenthood, despite ever-increasing availability of sorrogacy or adoption, but there are probably other examples of this sort of self-defeatism

there are exceptions to this, but I wonder how often in life the limitations people suffer under aren't actually their circumstance but their attitude about it

some bookcollectors dislike books with notes, but for me it can sometimes add character or value, especially when I acquire some book on history and discover it has annotations by a previous historian of the field.

Sometimes it's just my response or feelings on things in the text, but with my historical research it helps to make notes on useful or intriguing bits of information or statements I consider either quite true or quite wrong - in any case it makes it easier to relocate such passages later.

Bookcollecting is my main hobby and I also work in the rare book trade, for what it's worth, and in short yes, I annotate, but only certain books. I do not anotate fiction, for instance. But with biographies, memoirs, letters, diaries, and general nonfiction I do annotate and underline.
