Social background matters less once entry grades are controlled, though we find evidence of compensatory advantage for students from highly educated families.

Entry grades are the strongest predictor of academic success. But we also find that women are more likely to follow successful paths (including in STEM fields), while students aged 26+ tend to be more polarized: either they succeed through the optimal route or they drop out.

We analyse the academic trajectories of 30,000+ students entering Catalan universities in 2012–2013, tracked over 7 years.
Six different patterns emerge ranging from the “optimal route” (44%) to various dropout paths (early, stable, or late withdrawal).
