If you want to compare, here's Syzygium gustavioides (misspelled as gustavoides, because I should have checked before posting).

Deep pink new leaves among otherwise ordinary-looking light green leaves on a small plant, that is yet to grow into a big rainforest tree. The young leaves are long and narrow, whereas the older leaves are more oval shaped. The new foliage is very shiny.

Look at the beautiful new growth of Boonjee Satinash (Syzygium boonjee) from the Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland. Even better than that of Syzygium gustavioides, I think. (But I don't want to play favourites.)

S. boonjee has golden flowers. See: apps.lucidcentral.org/rainforest/t...

How many spiders and pseudoscorpions does it take to make one of the world’s greatest taxonomists? Former Perth curator Mark Harvey is one of the few people on Earth to have described 1,000 new species, many of them arachnids. Colleagues say his legacy is β€˜unquantifiable’

Mystery as remains of seven-arm deep-sea octopus wash up on beach Arms from the rarely-seen species were discovered at an Aberdeenshire national nature reserve.

One of the least-appreciated giant cephalopods, Haliphron atlanticus, is in the news! (thx @scsmith4.bsky.social for the heads up)
Unfortunately the common name seven-arm octopus
- only describes males
- actually doesn't even describe males
Can we think of a better one??

Start small, start now: Akaleha’—our forests’ living gems When you grow up in Micronesia, you can sometimes feel a bit small and overlooked compared to the rest of the world. After all, β€œMicro,” meaning β€œsmall,” is literally in

Lovely piece from @anngawel.bsky.social on akaleha' tree snails in Guam & the CNMI. Dr. Gawel visited Rota to hear from elders on how they collected & used akaleha'. And she helped me map living akaleha' & showed me an akaleha' site I didn't know! #JoyOfMolluscs

Heart Mountain (Wyoming) - Wikipedia

Good heavens. This is something:

"The consensus favors catastrophic sliding and calculations suggest that the front of the sliding mass may have advanced at a speed of over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h)..."

This is the Sunburst Candy Spider from Thailand. Not AI (sucks to have to declare this). Very real and had been on my wish list for a long time.

The taxonomic placement is unclear, so we are leaving it at Cyrtarachninae.

We were in Chile to look at birds, but I'd like to go back to focus on the ground--insects, arachnids, plants, lizards... All amazing!

Gloriously iridescent ground beetle scurrying across the dirt. The beetle is predominantly a shimmering emerald green (imagine the shimmer because this is a still photo) with beautiful burgundy along the edge of the wing cases. A+ beetle. Wish I'd had the proper camera instead of a phone.

There was also this smaller but very handsome critter, which was not interested in the phone or my fingers and just wanted to go about its day.

Very solid beetle crawling across a ring-bound notebook towards the camera. The main feature are the robust jaws. The eyes are enormous and behind them, the prothorax has two indentations and a dramatic flare on either side. Photo taken in southern Chile by me.

I think I must have bigged it up in my memory, but it was quite hefty! Not the best pic but it was quite intrigued by the phone and/or my fingers, so it was all a bit hurried.
