8/ In the survey, we emphasize studies with credible causal identification. Correlational work is also covered to provide a fuller picture. There remains a large scope for better identified studies in this literature.

7/ We highlight cases where secular reforms or movements within faith communities pushed toward greater gender equality. Religious influence can evolve – and sometimes becomes a vehicle for change rather than preservation. ✊♀️

6/ We review evidence on religion and health, law, and political participation. Religion shapes the rules that govern women’s lives across history. Religion often reinforces traditional gender roles, shaping education, work, family, and politics. 📚👨‍👩‍👧

5/ Part II turns to how religions shapes gender norms and outcomes. Religious teachings often reinforce traditional gender roles, affecting how societies view “appropriate” roles for women and men at home, in the labor market, and in politics. 👩‍🏫👨‍💼

4/ 🧠 Scholars have proposed many explanations: women’s traditional roles and time at home, greater risk-aversion, gender socialization from a young age, and even physiological differences. Our survey discusses these perspectives, finding that no single explanations fully..
