TIL adding a high pass filter can cause the output signal to increase on a track. Makes sense, cutting low frequencies will change the shape of the waveform meaning some previously phase cancelled frequencies could come through which results in higher dB output.

The problem I've been facing when trying to get back into writing music is I have no idea what kind of music I want to write. I've contented myself by having goals like make a pretty synth patch, or create a drum loop I like.

Today's the first day I've written something I think I want to continue 😊

Speaking of #chiptune, what’s the scene like these days? Who’s making waves?

I even bought a modern flashable gameboy cartridge because I’m an adult with a salary, instead of buying weed let’s just make tunes.

I remember back in 2011 using my student loan to buy some EMS 64m carts, which was an investment back then.

Feels nice having money to spend on my hobbies now.

A lot of this stuff has just been hanging out under beds or in cupboards, might as well sell it to people who’d use it.

This way I can buy more appropriately sized things, my wee office space will double as a mini music production space.

I’m hoping the intentionality here will help inspire me.

I’ve been selling a lot of the music gear I have held onto over the past 12 years from my old chiptune days. That sounds like the end of an era but I’m using the money I’m getting to buy equipment I’d actually use today!

Sold my KRK Rokit 5s for more sensible Yamaha HS4s for example.

I got a Novation Launchkey 49 and it’s so good 🤓 the chord map feature is especially exciting to me because it helps me apply music theory despite my shit piano playing skills.

The more I learn about the circle of fifths the wilder it gets. I just found out if you use a half circle on it you can see what notes are in a particular scale. Here’s an example showing C, F, and B♭Major.

What other secrets do you hold magic circle?

I'm not entirely sure when I'd be confident enough to start playing with modes properly, but I would love to try.

Right now I'm just using C Major and going through its modes because it's easiest to do (hello white keys!). It's cool hearing the different moods they evoke.

Question for the musically inclined: what's the best way to learn modes?

a) as positions within a major scale? e.g. A minor starts on the sixth scale degree of C Major
b) as accidentals you add to major/minor scales to change them into a particular mode? e.g. add a flat/sharp on these notes

I forgot how much fun sound design can be in LSDj. The limitations of the hardware and the fact it can only play 4 voices at once really force you to get creative.

I couldn’t sleep last night so I sat downstairs writing music until 1:30am ♥️

I’ve been learning about the harmonic series and additive synthesis today, I vaguely remember this stuff from uni but I’m having a great time relearning it.

Physics and music theory are awesome.

I had these in a box under the bed for years.

7 Gameboys, 5 LSDj carts, and 1 nanoloop v1.5 cart

Some of these gameboys have seen better days haha that green one got fried after a gig in Glasgow when a bottle of beer smashed on it

It's been so long since I've used LSDj! Johan has released v9 and I've got carts here running v2.

I'm going to try getting my old songs off these carts just so I have them safely backed up. It's a miracle the internal battery hasn't died on these in 10 years and wiped everything.

Memory leak?

I opened Ableton with the goal of just writing a simple 4 bar drum loop for fun. Now time to log in for work is fast approaching and I don’t want to stop because it’s so groovy 😭

Update: loaded up a string ensemble instrument in Ableton and played I -> ii in D Major and immediately recognised it as M83 - Outro.

I had to stop and listen to the actual song in its entirety. Damn fine.

I also found out tonight that Green Day's Basket Case has the same chord sequence as Canon in D!

Music theory is so cool. Music is just lego blocks. I got a theory book focused on writing melodies and it's insane how a little bit of knowledge just propels you forward.

It got me playing around with a I, ii, vi, IV chord sequence on the piano (Beyonce uses this in Halo 💁). It sounds lovely!

Got to Dobbies 15 mins before it opened and wanted to see what Christmas stuff they have, cue me peering through their windows
