After leukemia treatments failed, Alyssa Tapley, at age 13, was told she would die. Then, doctors tried an experimental gene-edited therapy. She became the first human to try the treatment made possible by U.S. federal funding. Now 16, she’s cancer-free and planning her future.

Amazing how every year the offensive line somehow gets worse despite everyone’s efforts. All we need is Storm Norton to return and my nightmares will become reality

I’m not happy, Mina. Quite the opposite, really.

Private equity has no role in healthcare. The Steward Health fiasco should be the only lesson this country needs. Unfortunately, I think this issue will need to be handled on a state by state basis for the foreseeable future.

The Baby Died. Whose Fault Is It? When her son died in utero, a venture capitalist went to extremes to punish her surrogate.

Surrogate pregnancies are increasingly popular in tech circles, and the practice is expected to explode globally in the coming decade. It’s also shockingly unregulated. This is a story about what happens when it goes horribly wrong.

I’ve watched them lose this game repeatedly season after season. So refreshing to see them win one over the Chiefs like this.

Have listened to many experts discuss how much better Bala is tolerated with extended dosing intervals of 9 weeks or so. Hopefully they take FDAs recommendation to enroll more pts at these other dosages this time. Clearly seems to be a drug that would help our pts if we can give it safely.

Dr. Schroeder’s Cancer Biology class as an undergrad is partially what set me on the path to becoming an Oncologist. Great professor and teacher. Very worried about the damage to science and what that’ll mean for our patients.

They’ll miss dialysis sessions because they can’t afford the copays. Then they’ll wind up in the ER, and won’t be able to afford their hospitalization bills, which may include an ICU admission for urgent HD. Cruel and thoughtless.

At this point, we have to hope they don’t remove vaccinations altogether. Very worrisome for Americans, particularly newborns and babies.

In residency, took care of someone we found out had Norwegian Crusted Scabies (of course after several days in the hospital and lots of exposures). It’s super infectious. Everyone exposed had to do permethrin, and every itch for weeks had me paranoid

Data from #ASCO25 showed that Medicaid expansion was associated with improved survival for patients with newly diagnosed cancer. It doesn’t matter what advancements we make if access to care is denied.

I regularly listen to @oncbrothers.bsky.social, Neil Love’s Research to Practice, Blood Cancer Talks, and sporadically some others depending on the content of the episode! Any additional suggestions you like?

In 2023, the U.S. spent approximately $1.35 trillion on healthcare administration. That’s more than we spent on:
β€’Physician salaries (~$350B)
β€’Nursing salaries (~$335B)
β€’Retail prescription drugs (~$450B)
β€’Imaging, lab tests, EHRs, and outpatient procedures combined

Cytoreductive nephrectomy in the era of immune checkpoint inhibitors: a US Food and Drug Administration pooled analysis AbstractBackground. This pooled analysis of patient-level data from trials evaluated the clinical outcomes of patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma

Interesting data answering an important questionβ€”the role of cytoreductive nephrectomy with modern IO-TKI based treatments. In this pooled analysis from 5 trials, CN associated with OS benefit of 46 vs 28 months (HR 0.63, 95% CI 0.51-0.77).

I want politics to be about a better everyday life.

Here's what that can look like:

I tell patients and friends/family the same. They can be curable for many patients, but it comes at a high price. Much better to get vaccinated, even if you’re an adult. I got mine in my late 20s.
