Shame is not what’s needed or intended. We need to read and share the true facts of our shared history, learn from the mistakes, actions, attitudes of the past - and actively work toward a better future for all.

I was always baffled by the parents who would complain that their children “felt bad” when learning about slavery. Isn’t that an appropriate emotion? Then your job as a parent is to explain why it’s good that we know about bad things that happened, so we can make sure they never happen again.
