LETTER TO THE EDITOR: The overlooked benefits of DEI In this letter to the editor Teri Kirby, a Purdue professor in the college of health and human sciences, and Sapna Cheryan, a professor from the University of Washington, draw on research to emphasize...

Anyone still trying to make the case for the importance of keeping cultural centers and other DEI initiatives on their campus? Sapna Cheryan and I wrote a piece on this for the Purdue Exponent - please share it with others if helpful: www.purdueexponent.org/opinion/lett...

While teaching a course on Item Response Theory this semester, I created a Shiny app for visualizing some polytomous item response models: falkcarl.shinyapps.io/polytomous/

This is an initial draft, so comments/questions/suggestions are welcome!

In Ireland we probably averted about 500 newborn RSV hospitalizations once nirsevimab was introduced last year (~75% risk reduction). Uptake was > 80%, and that's what's threatened by these cynical safety concerns from the antivaxxers in the US government.

New preprint alert🚨

We often rely on 0-10 scales to assess suicide urges in EMA and clinical settings. But we rarely ask a surprisingly important question:

What do these numbers mean?

In our new paper, we examine what these ratings mean and how consistently people use them.

Folks might not know a lot of people are getting *very* upset that the materials they request are not available in the libraries/archives they're requesting from.

We're getting lots here at the Library of Virginia: requests of documents likely surfaced by large language models that *do not exist*.

Sadly, readings criticizing Open Science were more frequent than readings dealing with HARKing, registered reports, measurement issues, fraud, incorrect reporting of results, detecting β€œbad science” and open access.

one of many parallels between anti-vaxxers & those who oppose gender-affirming care: they start by pretending they have a very specific concern (MMR vaccine, puberty blockers, etc), but once given any sway or say on the matter, they quickly strive to eliminate all of it

My employer, Dartmouth College, today boasts it's 1st Ivy "to launch AI at an institutional scale." It is doing this by partnering--"more than a collaboration"--with Anthropic, a company that stole the books of many faculty, me included, which many of us are suing.

Fair enough. And also, my argument is that by even engaging in the discussion about the quality of the work legitimizes the idea that it's somehow about the work. "Fair and balanced" and all.

right...it's not all necessarily planned out beforehand, but there's massive animus against trans ppl and a huge infrastructure for destroying trans ppl, knowledge of which is widely available in right wing christofascist circles. 1

Academics are so vulnerable to getting sucked into the details without seeing the bigger picture. It's really hard for them to see some arguments as just bad faith and not worth engaging in. Instead they jump in to evaluate the essay, not realizing they're just legitimizing the bad faith attack.

It's almost a familiar storyline by now.
1. An "egregious" violation of a students' rights by a teacher.
2. It turns out to be run of the mill bad work by the student.
3. It turns out to have been provoked or amplified by a huge network of right wingers.
4. Targeting trans people

Missing anything?

It's becoming increasingly clear that many of these events are orchestrated (either a-priori or post-hoc) to target trans people and generate widespread outrage.

Totally agree on "why" being hard for people. We see lots of self-reports of "I did this because I was sad" really just correlates with experiencing lots of sadness instead of a real antecedent to a momentary behavior.
