I have a new webcomic! pminasandra.github.io/remarkable/?...

Although I use Bluesky mainly for science, I think some of you might enjoy some of these more nerdy comics. Some examples uploaded below. Check out the link for more!

Evolutionary history of ponerine ants highlights how the timing of dispersal events shapes modern biodiversity Nature Communications - The diversity of ponerine ants varies widely across the globe. This study finds that the origin and early colonization in Gondwana’s tropical regions mainly shaped...

Timing is everything in the evolution of ponerine ants! Happy to see this paper out. Great work by MaΓ«l DorΓ© et al. rdcu.be/eGGRg

Simpson's tachytely or bradytely? The importance of quantifying rate uncertainty The spectacular variation in species forms and richness across space and time can be explored using sophisticated and powerful tools recently developed by evolutionary modellers. In this contribut...

In this talk I focus on work with my the wonderful @lhliow.bsky.social where we spent time re-reading Simpson's Mode and Tempo in Evolution, figuring out horotely, bradytely, and tachytely. The result of that work is here besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

In summary, the peninsular India plate experienced β€œidiosyncratic” biotic diversification. These insights into how past climate and habitat stability influenced biotic diversification can prove crucial especially under today's climatic crisis.

And, the remaining 16 groups had quite dynamic diversification trajectories due to non-uniformities in speciation and extinction rates across time, influenced by global paleotemperature and mid-Miocene intensification of aridification and monsoons.

Furthermore we inferred a prevalence of gradual accumulation of species diversity in the peninsular Indian landscape in 17 out of 33 groups, suggesting important role of habitat stability in tropical ecosystems.

We found that there's immense disparity in diversification rates across these groups and more closely related species share similar diversification rates. Additionally the age of a group was found to strongly govern its diversification rate.

In this paper we explored diversification dynamics (overall rate and temporal patterns) of 33 endemic groups of animal and plant species from peninsular India.
