"A spindle-whorl for a spindle-whorl", as the Old Testament says (vaguely remembered).
Here's one from Orkney for Women's Day, in Sc. Gaelic & ogham script (Buckquoy, S-ORK-005). It probably reads BENDDACTANIML "a blessing, soul of L".

Happy International Women’s Day to Þora, who owned this spindle-whorl sometime in the 14th century in Iceland.

The inscription reads þo^ra:amig, ‘Þora owns me’. #runology #runes

Gone Medieval: How Islam came to Iran How did Islam first take root on Iranian soil? What did medieval Iran - or Persia - look like before and afterwards? How do those early encounters still echo through Iranian society today?&nbs...

Characteristically excellent interview with @sasanianshah.bsky.social on the Sasanians and Iranian history. It manages the fine balance between introductory and detailed, it's interdisciplinary, it's fun, it's def worth your time.

Fantastic blogpost by @patthomson.bsky.social on productive discomfort 👏 ‘Academic writing is a form of thinking. It’s not the transcription of thoughts already completed, but a process of thinking itself.’ patthomson.net/2026/03/08/g...

I do not like this gen AI
I do not like what it implies
I do not want it in my art
I do not think it makes you smart
I do not want it in my games
I do not like its goals and aims
I do not want it in my books
I do not like the way it looks
I do not like it, I don't care
I do not want it anywhere

As a writer, one of the most useful books I own is Nöfn Íslendinga (The Names of Icelanders). It lists, in alphabetical order, all the names that Icelanders have ever born*. It's so useful when naming characters and it's now online!

*A precedent does not mean that the name would be allowed now.
