Guilt, Hope, and Uncertainty: Three Eaton Fire Survivors, Three Different Journeys Sierra will follow three Eaton Fire survivors for a year as they navigate displacement, loss of work, and rebuilding community

Today Sierra launched part 1 of a yearlong series covering 3 neighbors on different post-Eaton-Fire journeys. We hope this longitudinal coverage combats the loss of public attention that follows the end of breaking newsβ€”the story is really just starting for survivors. Words by @colleenhagerty.com.

Is there any speculative fiction that explores Turtle Island in the 21st century, if colonizers had never arrived?

It was a preorder with registration! It’s so good right? Leaning all the way into the dark humor of the moment.

Radioactive Shadow Workers The treatment of oil and gas field waste is a dirty industry’s dirtiest secret

The toll humanity pays for the oil and gas industry is even bleaker than you might think. In the shadows: an unprotected workforce cleans up radioactive waste, while American consumers buy up pool salts derived from this harm. Read Justin Nobel's investigation for Sierra (psst it's free!).

For @sierramagazine.bsky.social, I took a deep look at how Acadia National Park became a laboratory for the park service's efforts to adapt to climate change and incorporate Indigenous knowledge into its decision making. Here's hoping those policies survive 2025!

Indigenous scientists and National Park employees are working together to make sure Acadia survives a warmer future and higher sea levels. The lessons they're learning here could soon be used to make all National Parks more resilient in the face of climate change.

Acadia is now a living climate change land management labβ€”one that’s FINALLY centering Indigenous science. The experiment will inform future plans across NPS. @kpaoletta.bsky.social brought us this vivid story in Feb and I’m thrilled you all finally get to read it. www.sierraclub.org/sierra/2024-...

The funny thing about what's happening on Bluesky atm is that I guess I've technically been on this app for over a year, but I haven't really used itβ€”set it and forget it vibesβ€”and now am suddenly getting notifications about this.

Still relevant! Wrap your gifts in reusable stuff you already have!

Low flow along the Mississippi River has allowed saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico to infiltrate the river for the third year in a rowβ€”a formerly once-in-a-decade event that threatens drinking water for tens of thousands. Here are some of the potential solutions.

Literally any of them lmao. Anna’s is the floor. At times I would even rate Chipotle higher. But real talk: pretty much anywhere in Eastie; outside of Eastie it’s Tenoch and Chilacates; and further out in the suburbs it’s Tango Mango. Tenoch has huitlacoche on the menu and is queen for that alone.

French vanilla refers to a style of French ice creamβ€”made with eggsβ€”not to the vanilla itself. But still, how vanilla ended up in France, bad; and how French vanilla ice cream ended up in the US, also bad (James Hemings, enslaved chef to Jefferson, was sent to France for cooking lessons).
