We have two fantastically well-funded #PhD studentships available through the @evomg-dn.bsky.social #EU doctoral network (led by brilliant @mirimiam.bsky.social, @crg.eu). These enable students to move to the UK and come and work with us @icr.ac.uk to exploit #cancer #evolution for patient benefit.

Las week, the @prbb.org hosted the Iberian EvoMG PI Meeting 2025. An event organized by the @evomg-bcn.bsky.social & @biomics-twinning.bsky.social to bring together all researchers working on the different areas of evolutionary medical genomics.

And last but not least, closing this very intense meeting, Jesús Perez-Losada, from iBMCC, told us about their work on molecular and genetic determinants of cancer susceptibility, evolution, and treatment response.

Next, Solip Park, from CNIO ( @cniostopcancer.bsky.social ), spoke about her work in context-specific cancer fitness landscapes and protein-protein interactions.

Next, Rosa Fernández ( @rosafernandez.bsky.social ), from the EvoMG Program and @ibe-barcelona.bsky.social, gave her flash talk about genome evolution in annelids and how they could be novel models to understand genomic instability events in cancer.

Then, Ferran Nadeu ( @ferrannadeu.bsky.social ), from IDIBAPS ( @idibaps.bsky.social ), told us about his work on origin and immuno-genomic forces driving multiple and independent CLL expansions.

Next, Donate Weghorn ( @weghornlab.bsky.social ), from the EvoMG Program and @crg.eu, talked about her work on mutational processes and selection in cancer.

David Posada, CINBIO, U Vigo

And the last session of the meeting was Session 5: Cancer.

The first speaker was David Posada ( @davidposada.bsky.social ), from the Universidade de Vigo and @cinbio.bsky.social, who showed us how somatic phylogenetics can provide fundamental insights into the evolutionary dynamics of cancer.

In between Sessions 4 (aging) and 5 (cancer), we had the perfect bridge between the two topics, with the second keynote talk, by Iñigo Martincorena (@imartincorena.bsky.social), who told us about their work on somatic evolution, and its implications for aging and cancer.

And the last speaker of the session was Marc de Manuel ( @marcdemanuel.bsky.social ), from the EvoMG Program and @ibe-barcelona.bsky.social presenting his work on mutation.

And also from @cabd-upo-csic.bsky.social , Juan Tena, presented his lab's work on aging using killifish and a collaborative project to understand age-related retina degeneration.

Next, Juan Ramón Martinez Morales ( @jrmarmor.bsky.social ), from @cabd-upo-csic.bsky.social , presented their work on eye malformations and aging, and the underlying gene regulatory networks, using fish models.

Jose Bessa, i3S

Continuing on pancreas and #diabetes, Jose Bessa from i3S ( @i3suporto.bsky.social ) presented his work on characterizing regualtory elements in zebrafish and mammals with relevance to this disease.

Jonas Juan-Mateu, from the EvoMG Program and @melisupf.bsky.social presented his work on microexons and diabetes and the plans to investigate diet adaptations in bats.

David Comas, EvoMG Program, UPF, IBE

Next, David Comas, also from the EvoMG Program, @melisupf.bsky.social and @ibe-barcelona.bsky.social, who could not attend Session 2, presented in this session their work on adaptation to malaria of Sudanese Copts and the evolutionary history of the Roma population.

The first speaker was Arcadi Navarro, from the EvoMG Program, @melisupf.bsky.social , @crg.eu, @ibe-barcelona.bsky.social, @fpmaragall.bsky.social et al, who told us how they plan to study cancer & longevity across evolution to learn about their major determinants.

The last day (Fri 10/10) started with Session 4: Aging and related diseases.

And closing this intense session and the main day of talks, Toni Gabaldón ( @gabaldonlab.bsky.social and @tonigabaldon.bsky.social ), from BSC and IRB ( @irbbarcelona.org ), told us about their work on the evolution and pathogenicity of Candida.

Next, Tanja Dapa ( @tanjadapa.bsky.social ), from the CABD-CSIC-UPO ( @cabd-upo-csic.bsky.social ), talked about her work on bacterial evolution in the gut under different dietary regimes and potential immunological connections.

Pedro José Esteves, CIBIO

Next, Pedro José Esteves, from CIBIO, summarized their work on co-evolution of virus and host and on rabbit as an immunologic model.

Teresa M. Coque, IRYCIS-RyC Hospital

Also from IRYCIS-RyC Hospital, now Teresa Coque @tmcoque.bsky.social , told us in her flash talk about their work on transmission and adaptation of COPs in the patient-care environment.

Val F. Lanza, IRYCIS-RyC Hospital

Then, Val F. Lanza, from IRYCIS-RyC Hospital, talked about her tools to investigate and track bacterial infection and evolution.

Next, Mireia Valles-Colomer ( @mireiavallesc.bsky.social ), from the EvoMG Program and @melisupf.bsky.social , talked about her work about microbiome transmission.

Then, we Mireia Coscollà ( @pathogenomics.bsky.social ), from I2SysBio ( @i2sysbio.es ) talked about compatibility between hosts in bacterial infections.

Maria Isabel Veiga, ICVS

And after the round table, we continued Session 3 on microbes, microbiome and antibiotic resistance, with Maria Isabel Veiga, from @icvs-uminho.bsky.social , who talked about drug resistance in malaria.

After the coffee break, we had a round table about dealing with evolution of drug resistance & synergies among EvoMG fields. We had a panel representing the different related "areas": Isabel Veiga (Plasmodium), David Posada (Cancer), Jero Rodriguez (Bacteria), Ana Abecasis (Virus).
