Showing my age here but even though commercial media is rarely if ever truly transgressive (to be so would be antithetical to profit models), the phenomenon of turning that into a ‘gotcha!’ to prove individual moral righteousness over others, usually perpetuated by that same class, is fairly new.

(Perhaps now over) a decade ago, I feel a regressive culture of so-called ‘safe spaces’ was birthed on places like tumblr that built itself around popular media that directly pandered to a comfortably liberal class of privilege. Over time the cushion of ‘moral goodness’ became a fandom necessity.
