A quote from Matt Robinson, CEO of Learning through Landscapes, which reads: βWe're extremely grateful to the teachers who volunteered their valuable time to support the survey. The interest in this huge piece of research, capturing evidence from over 1000 Scottish schools, is an indication of how strongly educators value their grounds. "The survey will inform LtLβs work within the schools grounds sector, supporting schools to get the most from their outdoor spaces. Importantly, it also provides robust evidence for the need for policy change and better collaboration."
The report reflects the positive impact of outdoor learning, play, and nature connection on school communities, and evidences some positive changes in the Scottish school estate since the 2005 survey. However, it also reveals the work left to do.
Our CEO, Matt Robinson, reflects on the project:

McKendrick", showing two images of primary school children engaging in outdoor activities in two different types of school grounds. In the first image, the children are working together to carry a fallen branch through their leafy grounds. In the second image, the children are running and sliding down a tarpaulin on a grassy bank with houses visible beyond the fence behind them.
