Tune the game for pacing and fun. Combat that drags loses tension.
Keeping it snappy keeps players engaged, and the threat still feels real.
Most monsters die faster, but they hit just as hard. The danger doesn’t go away, only the slog does.
Or, take the modern DM shortcut: just call the fight.
Let the next player’s attack finish it. HP is just a pacing tool. If the danger felt real, and you skip the slog at the end, your game moves faster, and no one will complain. Most won’t even notice.
D&D combat doesn't have to be slow:
1) Cut enemy HP in half. Seriously, just do it.
2) Boost player damage. Give +1d4 damage whenever a player describes their attack in detail. Players will always rise to the occasion when bonus damage is on the table for being descriptive.
