It's also been inconsistent historically. Before Game Drops it made more sense since minor versions rarely added any substantial content. During development it changed several times, with some versions simply having inconsistent formats for no apparent reason.

Today, Minecraft gains its millionth registered user. Of these users with accounts, only 30% have actually bought the game, but that still makes for almost 300k Alpha players, and that percentage continues to grow.
