The appeal of blobs for me vore-wise is

1) the unimaginable amount of people you'd have to eat to get that large

My European literature class just wrapped up its Victorian unit, which was Frankenstein/Jekyll & Hyde/Christmas Carol, and the common thread seems to be that these are stories about the problems of a hyper-specific place and time that have since been broadly applied and watered out of their meaning
