Audax, underbiking & velomobiles. Occasional tallbiking. Genius who brought you SPD Crocs, inventor of the Meths Martini & no longer allowed unsupervised lab access. Upsetting in an oddly lingering kind of way.

Just listened to it. That was absolutely beautiful - thanks for the prompt.

Hang on. That was without factoring in the travel time. That suppresses my salary by about another Β£7k/yr!

I worked out yesterday that for the 2-3 days a week I spend in the office, I’m currently paying out about Β£4,500/yr.

If that’s grossed up for PAYE & NI, it means a fully WFH / walkable job would be the equivalent of nearly a Β£6K pay rise!

e.g. if for a 40hr wk you spend 10hrs commuting, divide salary by1.25

If it costs Β£3k in travel costs, deduct that from the balance too. Use actual train fares, or if driving, the HMRC rate that applies.

Then ask if it’s really worth taking that job.

I disagree with this as it’d bake in and encourage longer commuting.

That said, when you take a job, you should factor in the commuting time and costs against the salary.

Imagine a Britain where we had used the profits from North Sea Oil to prepare for it running out and having a transport network that works rather than giving rich people a tax cut.

2558 drones and 19 cruise missiles

Imagine how much suffering would have been prevented if the west spent as much on Ukraine as on the war on Iran.

Also: The Iranian regime is evil and it's death is a good thing but a war which will hurt the civilian population is neither lawful nor ethical.

Traffic wardens get a lot of stick but they perform a vital public service. Imagine the chaos if they didn't exist?

Just watched this β€œcomedy drama”, which was pretty upsetting.

By the time he got his bike into the rack next to mine I was already leaving on the run.

I made a point of being at the finish like waiting for him to cheer, whoop and clap. ☺️

So on the third time I passed him, I said, β€œGood ride. But you know you have to race UPHILL too, right?”

He passed me on the descent & for the final flat 5km I sat 10m off his back wheel.

At the line for transition I pulled level dismounted, threw my bike over my shoulder & ran.

My last triathlon, about 15 yrs ago had a rolling middle section for the bike. I was on a Β£500 Giant & went past a guy on a £££ TT bike on a climb. He came past me on the descent & I gave him the customary β€œGood race!” as he passed.

*Nothing* Completely blanked me.

Same going over the next hill.

Nice post. Do you have suggestions on how to minimise condensation in the tent, and what to do about it?

Two scientists walk through a cluttered old-fashioned science laboratory.

The female scientist says
β€œAnalogue instruments! Paper records! Chalk boards! I thought you'd agreed to modernise the laboratory?”

The male scientist replies
β€œThat's what i'm so excited about: we have moved to cloud-based storage for our data!”

They step out onto a balcony. She says:
β€œPlease tell me you haven't built a library zeppelin”

This is exactly what he has done. It floats across the sky and he adds
β€œIt's got a fax machine!”

Bonus me in another decade. This one’s about 1990, and I am in the middle of passing my future father in law’s How Serious Are You About My Daughter Test.

During COVID, cities successfully reallocated street space from cars to people. We proved it works.

It’s frustrating how quickly those changes vanished, restoring the oppressive status quo where cars dominate and people are pushed back to the margins.
