I wonder whether this year, we failed to clear the air about 2021, when 80,000 souls voted No on 2.
"Opponents spent $$$ to twist the Q2 story!" Yes, they did, to a receptive audience. It's still working.
"Q2 is not on the ballot this year!" But the unresolved schism is.

I read Liam's thread yesterday about the dire state of city government under Frey. That these conditions weren't and aren't common knowledge, says something strange and deeply discouraging about the ?culture? ?power structure? in our city, and is a big part of why Frey may win re-election anyway.

I guess I'm saying: If the mayor is re-elected in spite of it all, it may not mean that the slate was bad strategy. Rather it may just mean that left-of-center folks still don't have the numbers. Part of the bleak reality of today.
Again, I hope I'm wrong. Thanks for reading. โฎ๏ธโฎ๏ธโฎ๏ธ 6/6

But perceptions among moderates and "non-political" types, abetted by a hostile information environment, are part of the hand we're all dealt.
I feel like there are tradeoffs between movement politics and election politics. I also think Mamdani is a unicorn in a perfect storm, if you will. 5/

... partly because it's evidence against the stereotype of the left as rigid and doctrinaire. The left can be the pragmatic faction! Moreover, the establishment types can be my-way-or-the-highway...at least when dealing with the left! 4/

Q: If lots of Hampton voters rank Frey 2nd/3rd, does that mean Jazz didn't campaign hard enough for the slate?
A: Maybe. Or maybe those voters were never going to rank Fateh.
IMO Hampton was trying to thread a very fine needle. I honestly appreciate those on the left who ranked Jazz at all... 3/

(NB I would love to be wrong about this year!)
I think there's a grain of truth to the thought that bsky is part of a bubble, just as the Strib/WCCO/etc (and of course RW media) are in bubbles. In 2017 and '21, their bubbles were just bigger than ours. In their bubbles, Frey's the devil you know. 2/

I ranked Hampton 1, Davis 2, Fateh 3. I'm expecting Frey to win, Jazz to do better than expected, and Fateh supporters to be disappointed by the RCV reallocations.
I don't think the 2021 no-on-2 voters are done being freaked out by the possibility of real change. (I voted Kate/Sheila, yes on 2.) 1/

I'd be curious as to whether @amberforparks.bsky.social was aware of this mailer before it was sent. (Honestly curious! My guess is that Amber was unaware. And I dunno what they ought to have done, even if aware.)
It's just so strange how the state DFL is treating us all....

Stancil? I mean, maybe he's more anti-anti-Frey than pro-Frey. (I haven't checked his bsky feed in a long time, so dunno what he's said lately)

Reminds me of that first week in June. IIRC there were militarized raids in San Diego and Minneapolis within days of each other. I wondered: How many DFLers in our city cheered on the citizens of SD in their resistance, only to turn around and agree with our mayor in minimizing what happened here?

James Sullivan Obituary
Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 21, 2024.
James Sullivan, 62, of Saint Paul, MN, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 28, 2024 after 9 month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was a family man who balanced a successful consulting career. Jim was charismatic, hardworking, and always put others first. He is survived by his wife Susan, son Bill Sullivan, daughter-in-law Julie Sullivan, grandson Braden, and granddaughter Simone. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Tracy Sullivan, and his brother Tim Sullivan.
Jim attended the University of Minnesota and had a career in political consulting, including serving as the North Dakota Field Organizer for the Dukakis for President campaign in 1988 where he cut his teeth and never looked back. In his free time, he enjoyed pheasant hunting and was a lifelong Rotarian.
A private internment was held earlier this month with close friends and family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a charity of your choice in James Sullivan's memory.
To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
I took a couple.

I'm not sure that we want to go down this rabbit hole right now :) I think Hodges' story is complicated.
I'm guessing we can agree that there were voters who ranked Dehn but not Hodges, and that there were people who at least ranked both Hoch and Frey together.

Hoch and Frey, yes. Ray Dehn finished second, after running mostly to the left of the incumbent at the time.

I had forgotten that in 2017, in the first round of RCV voting, Tom Hoch had around 19% of first-choice ballots. That's a lot of votes, for someone who was generally to the right of Frey.

MINNEAPOLIS
The fierce urgency of Omar
Fateh
Over the last five years, the two-term state senator has gone from political unknown to Minneapolis progressives' best hope for defeating Jacob Frey.

For posterity, in case they change it to something more ominous-sounding.

I did one canvass for CM Cashman. A homeowner was adamant that the DSA Councilmembers are out to burn it all down. As an example, they said that the Council torpedoed a consensus agreement on what to do with George Floyd Square. I didn't know enough to respond.

I just gave a little bit to two underrated, crucial campaigns: @efornorth.bsky.social (City Council, Ward 5) and @ehbforbet.bsky.social (Board of Estimate and Taxation). I heard elsewhere there's some kind of campaign finance deadline tonight. Go E! Go EHB!

This YouTuber, known as KatGetsMoney on TikTok, has been interviewing Mpls mayoral candidates. Interviews with Fateh and Hampton are up. Dunno whether she's interviewing Davis but I hope so. On TT she says that she's interviewed the incumbent as well, stay tuned. ๐
