02.03.2026 21:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Just a small piece I've been thinking about for a while. It's about homesickness feeling like failure, and how I do miss CaffΓ© Nero and bird hides, but don't miss mandatory shoes and Farage's smug face. Somehow, this is about perfectionism. open.substack.com/pub/puzzledb...

02.03.2026 11:35 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Do you know, do not @ me to say "oh it's a foundational text or of its time". Guess what? Sociology moves on! We don't have to cite old dead white guys who said objectionable things! (Although, tbf, there is some good stuff in this that I potentially may use. So.)
02.03.2026 09:00 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Definitely leaves it open for a sequel!

02.03.2026 08:16 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've got a really horrible feeling based on an automated email I just got that the doctor's letter I paid for as medical evidence for my visa isn't going to be valid as my doctors isn't a "panel physician". So I'll have to pay a different doctor to say the same thing.

02.03.2026 02:43 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Eventually, he does get there a bit, but, frankly, the stigma is coming from inside the room. How is this the most often-cited text on stigma??

02.03.2026 02:42 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Section of Stigma by Erving Goffman reading: One method of disclosure is for the individual voluntatily to wear a stigma symbol, a highly visible sign that advertises ho failing wherever he goes. There are, for example, hard of hearing persons who wear a batteryless hearing aid,' the partly blind who affect a collapsible white cane; Jewesses who wear a Star of David as a necklace. It should be noted that some of these stigma symbols, such as a Knights of Columbus lapel button indicating that the wearer is Catholic, are not frankly presented as disclo. sures of stigma, but purportedly attest rather to membership in organizations claimed to have no such significance in themselves. It should be noted also that militant programmes of all kinds can be served by this device, for the self-symbolizing individual ensures his being cut off from the society of normals. I have written βerrrrrβ next to this cos ffs.
I hate this bloody book. (CN for ableism/antisemitism/general shittery)

26.02.2026 12:20 β π 194 π 8 π¬ 18 π 3The only reason I'm such a "cinema buff" is because I watched so many foreign movies in BBC2 and Channel 4 in the pre-internet 90s. Foreign films had boobs in them.

Already very tired of this βwell people are probably more open to conspiracy theories because the Epstein files showed there is a paedophilic eliteβ discourse.
That one was never all that contested, and you should absolutely vaccinate your kids.
Oof. I just read your post in the most uncharitable, pedantic way possible, and I gotta tell ya: it's not looking good for you.
01.03.2026 15:04 β π 9940 π 2082 π¬ 57 π 58Over the last two years, there have been assaults, violent attacks on mosques, and anti-Muslim rhetoric from prominent figures on the far right. But there's also been renewed scrutiny of issues within Muslim communities, and how well integration has happened. There are questions about how well successive governments have engaged with Muslims to deal with issues in their own communities, and Islamophobia from outside.
So the BBC did an article about a Muslim man who got hideous racist abuse for appearing in a βWelcomeβ advert at Heathrow airportβ¦

Kind of a nutty line from a 1958 Japan travel guide:
"Japan is now mass-producing very good small cars (Nissan Motor Company, Toyota Motor Company, etc.) suitable for the country's narrow roads and you may wish to buy one and ultimately bring it home as a second car."
