It was the first week of August and brutally hot, roughly 95 degrees. The hike up the steep steps didn't seem that far but considering my age and physical condition the palace nearly had one more sacrifice. Numerous smaller buildings surround the palace, as well as a Maya 'ball court'.
21.10.2025 00:08 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Xunantunich is an active archaeological site; there were multiple digs going while we were there. It's estimated that only about 30% of what is here is actually visible above ground. Stone markers left by the Maya show it was inhabited as of 630 AD and possibly another thousand years before. 3/4
21.10.2025 00:08 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I like to do the small studies to figure out the values, to test potential colors, and to practice drawing from the reference. I then did a somewhat larger 'test painting' to see if I liked the result of my plan. The foreground building became a mass of foliage in the final painting. 2/4

Pleased to tell you about the re-launch of my art website! I'll be posting work there for sale, plus new blog posts every Thursday or as close to that as I can manage. I'll still be posting sketches, paintings, and stuff here too, until the Careless People arrive at least.

Sometimes when I don't have enough time to dive into a painting I will do these small studies and just see what happens when colors mix on the paper.

Nowadays the signs of modernity are everywhere. But my daughter had been reading the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, which made us think about what living in this house must have been like. For a time, we let ourselves be dwarfed by the prairie expanse, as those who lived here might have been.

A long stretch of yellow sand beach with turquoise water leads off into the distance, with a steep-sided hill at the end. In the distance are some mountains partially hidden by layers of grey clouds (and some visible rain).
On this day in 2017 I visited this beach - on my first ever trip to the Westfjords. After seeing all the black sand beaches it was quite a surprise to find a white (well, yellow) sand one!
