study after study after study shows that literally just handing people money and telling them "do what you want with this" reduces homelessness, increases food security for children, makes it more likely people will find and retain jobs.1

One Marine Corps family from my district is now without pay during this shutdown β their only income frozen.Β

Stories like these remind us of the stakes of this shutdown. Those who serve our nation deserve better.
The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

Meanwhile, data centers are sucking up communitiesβ water and electricity.
AI is making the rich even richer while everyone else pays the price.
Wow! God bless them both.

Here's what my maga friend thinks is happening.
We volunteer to suffer. In Ezekiel, God lifts up humankind with a new idea - no more punishing children for their parents' crimes. Groundbreaking. But what if you want to take someone else's penance?
Jeremiah 1 says - BEFORE the womb, God knew him. Paul says by His stripes we are healed.
#3? Heroes.
Your verse - "and then the judgment" - doesn't say, "and then Heaven." IF we suffer as penance, this IS the judgment. As a separate issue, as Ernst so irritatingly pointed out, those who believe in Jesus never die. There are several ways to think about this reason for suffering, and it is only one.
02.11.2025 18:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0All scholarly Jews and Christians do believe in reincarnation, and will admit it - but then will say - Yes, God indeed reincarnates people, BUT! Then limit Him.
Elijah and Moses are expected to be reincarnated. Jesus said outright that John was Elijah, and Jews expect this.
Both return in Rev 11.
The second idea I have is the more conventional, that suffering brings us closer to God. It helps us know we need Him, so we search for Him. "Pain makes me a believer."
I knew a homeless alcoholic who sought treatment because he was plagued by mosquitoes.
My third idea is my favorite.
:)

Are you interested in my thoughts, though, or just in arrogantly "owning" the Christian? I worked with a parasitologist for years, and have seen medical misery.
I will tell you two possibilities.
Did you know most Jews and Christians believe in reincarnation? We do.
Suffering could be penance.

Itβs Sundayβ¦ so a Bible verse for you to share with Christians who need a reminder (like Congress):

02.11.2025 14:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Those who don't know God come up with rules to show how He would be, if He were a man. He is not a man. He knows everything, and we know only a very little.
I can think of three good reasons why God created evil and allows suffering - so if I can do this, God can think of a thousand.
No, I know everyone is on the same road, actually.
You should read the Tanakh. You would enjoy knowing the foundation of the three Abrahamic traditions, the same God worshipped by the majority of humans.
Learn Hebrew. It's beautiful.
Work out your own salvation. You won't regret it. Good night.
Ugh - you are awfully tiresome, my friend - with your ugly "You were saying" - haha! There are dozens of "lists of the damned" in the Bible, and we are all on all of them, and we are all NOT on all of them. Everyone will be a believer. The question was concerning God's love. It is not transactional.
02.11.2025 01:36 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0The normative definition of atheist is a belief there is no God. Whatever you are or are not, it makes no difference to me. God is not a respecter of persons.
02.11.2025 01:32 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That's not close to anything the Bible says. God just loves us. He is love. There is nothing at all you can do to make Him love you any more or less.
If you want to learn what the Bible says, start with Luke. He was a physician, so he appeals to those who tend towards skepticism.
Islam has the same God as Christianity and Judaism. They are called the Abrahamic religions because we all worship the God of Abraham.
But as a believer in God, I can appreciate any other belief system's advantages, and love faith, prayer, etc. Atheists must think everyone is wrong but themselves.
I haven't ever thought about this - what is my place in the universe? Before Jesus came to me, I was satisfied that my children would be my gift to the world, that I would fall asleep and die one day, and that was it. I thought most Christians were terrible people.
We work out our own salvation.
