It’s mainly the Eswatini government that has stonewalled our efforts to have contact with the men. One of their stories was that the US Embassy was in charge…but that seems unlikely.

As an org that has documented thousands of disappearances w/in the immigration system, we can say that what's going on here meets the UN definition of enforced disappearances. To say that the US is hurdling towards authoritarianism is no longer hyperbole

I assume this isn’t the last we have heard about chain refoulement after 3rd country deportations - so the battle to prevent it continues.

The court’s hands are tied to stop the administration from cavalierly sending people to torture. That’s where we are.

What I Witnessed as I Photographed the Disappearances and the Homecomings of My Countrymen Over the past four months, a photojournalist documented the lives of five families whose sons had been imprisoned in El Salvador, including their long-awaited reunions. CECOT left a mark on the men, t...

Many of the men deported to CECOT said they are permanently changed: struggling to sleep, drink water or leave their homes.

One man broke into tears describing how he had a panic attack the first time he walked down a busy Venezuelan street.

On the military flight from the US to Ghana, several of the men were put in straitjackets. Others were shackled.

As with many of the Third Country Removals, they didn’t even know where they were going until they were on the plane.

Several others, who were granted protection by US Immigration Judges from removal to Nigeria, were on the same flight to Ghana.

They are being held in a run-down camp and have been told they will be deported to Nigeria imminently.

The worst case scenario (not that any of isn’t terrible) with regard to Third Country Removals has happened:

A person, whom a US Immigration Judge determined was more likely than not to be tortured in The Gambia, was deported to a third country (Ghana)…which immediately deported him to The Gambia.

In these times that have felt profoundly disorienting, as people are moved across borders and oceans like game pieces in what a wise person described to me as a twisted match of 4D chess, I find comfort in reaching back to the tools I know best: good old, people powered grassroots advocacy.

Enrique is from Cuba. Nyo is from Burma. I don’t think either of them had ever heard of South Sudan before they were told that’s where they were headed on a military plane.

They have been detained in South Sudan since.
