Totally agree. It's like having a second river dividing the east of the city from the centre, but an incredibly ugly, noisy and polluting river.

Having said that, on a rare warm day when I lived in Edinburgh, we put a couple of chairs out the front of a friend's place on one of the more picturesque closes off Canongate and had a couple of beers. A tourist asked us to move because we were spoiling his photo.

95% of the time, neither am I. Just use a cheap folding one for shopping. Amazing what it can carry.

That's the thing, isn't it? Why would anyone care? I've just done 11 miles (to work, with a detour) on a standard bike. I honestly couldn't care less or even remember what other cyclists I saw were using. Apart from the 5 year old waving at everyone from her mother's cargo bike.

By the way, it's just physics. Say the ebike weighs 15kg more. That's all the motor has to overcome before it starts giving the rider an advantage (little things like aerodynamics and tyres apart).

Sorry, but that's just not true. Given the same rider, a £3000 ebike will easily outperform a £6000 carbon road bike up a steep hill. And yes, done both. It'll also carry the shopping up the same hill as a bonus.

I ride my analogue bike maybe 30 to 100 miles a week, depending on if I'm WFH or not. Couldn't care less if an ebike overtakes me. I use my cheapo ebike to go to the shops because I'm not competing in some sort of race, I'm shopping.
