03.12.2025 18:46 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A photo of workers at Individualized Shirts, a shirt factory in New Jersey. Each person has their fist in the air as a sign of solidarity. There's a sign behind them with photos and the words: "Fair Contract Now."
Disappointed to see this. 160 union workers are fighting for a fair contract at Individualized Shirts, a US factory that makes high-end men's button-ups. The managers there have rejected the union's request for fair wages and health insurance. The union is asking for support π§΅

03.12.2025 18:09 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0If you're around Cambridge/Harvard tomorrow, I'm teaming up with Panamanian attorney/Harvard fellow David Mizrachi to give a talk on the history of the Panama Canal at the Kennedy School. Despite the official-looking poster it will be a very informal event! www.hks.harvard.edu/events/panam...
03.12.2025 15:27 β π 7 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0everyone is talking about getting copies of University Keywords (or other JHU Press books) for all their friends, students, and comrades for the holidays, especially when it is 40% off with the code HHOL25.
24.11.2025 14:03 β π 28 π 13 π¬ 0 π 3Just ordered! At $20.97 this works out to LESS THAN $1 AN ESSAY for, e.g. @asheeshksi.bsky.social on "Board of Trustees"; @cnewf.bsky.social on "Degree"; @dennismhogan.bsky.social on "Endowment": & (one I read in draft) @andyhines.bsky.social, @kaibosworth.bsky.social et al on "Sustainability" π₯
24.11.2025 15:18 β π 14 π 8 π¬ 3 π 1I think itβs possible to do even more to make the style AND substance of the democratic party reflect the culture and proclivities of educated professionals, its last loyal stalwarts. Eventually we can make party so small it fits into one conference room
26.10.2025 19:36 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Donald Trump wants regime change in Venezuela. The last time the US invaded a Latin American country was in Panama, in 1989, killing hundreds and displacing thousands. Even afterwards, Panama was destabilized. In todayβs NYT, I argue an invasion of Venezuela would be far worse.

honored to be with @isanchezprado.bsky.social in @hyperallergic.com today!

Good morning! My comrade @annakornbluh.bsky.social and I published today in Hyperallrgic ean op-ed about the gutting of our right to culture and the ways to defend and fight back. Link below!

15.10.2025 18:35 β π 88 π 31 π¬ 1 π 0These are all fantastic pieces, and I'm grateful for the hard work our contributors put into them. Please read--and if you ever have an idea for an essay, book review, interview, or forum on higher ed, please get in touch with me. dennis dot m dot hogan at gmail dot com. I'm always reading pitches!
14.10.2025 17:13 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0And from @annaeclark.bsky.social, on the urgency of coordinating across higher and secondary education to train students in the skills they really need to succeed as readers, writers, and thinkers:
14.10.2025 17:10 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0From Steph Reist, on the tiered California public university system that still gatekeeps quality, four-year higher ed even while promising educational access:
14.10.2025 17:09 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0From Jarrel T. Johnson, on the ways that HBCUS--which have become a refuge for some Black students fleeing racist attacks on Higher ed--can better support queer and trans students:
14.10.2025 17:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0From Christian Collins, on recruiting and retaining Black and Hispanic men as a way to counter demographic declines in enrollment:
14.10.2025 17:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0From Jasper Cattell, on state-level political action as a remedy for federal attacks on academic workers rights: www.publicbooks.org/our-right-to...
14.10.2025 17:04 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0From @cnewf.bsky.social, on the need to start taking the levers of university power back: www.publicbooks.org/academics-mu...
14.10.2025 17:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Last week, Public Books published a roundtable that we put together on higher ed under Trump. Six contributors, six essays, six ideas for what those of us in higher education can do now to make the world a little better, a little saner, and a little safer. Read the series here (my intro below):
14.10.2025 17:03 β π 29 π 15 π¬ 1 π 0"the solution is still the one that can succeed: to build a new cultural order, a new civilization. To do so, academics must embrace an unusual new role: as knowledge workers, they must seize the means of knowledge production."
www.publicbooks.org/academics-mu...
Great call to arms by @cnewf.bsky.social, following the tactic of Jed Esty's "Future of Decline" by looking to Stuart Hall & the New Left, & urging us to forego "private agency within our universities" in favor of "collective agency by running them."
06.10.2025 19:43 β π 77 π 29 π¬ 1 π 3Interesting! Thanks!
13.10.2025 03:51 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0but would anyone in the 18th century have thought of what they were up to as a "project", or is that a scholarly imposition? (Not quibbling with the term's usefulness--I employ it myself often!)
13.10.2025 03:01 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0yes that's true. I'm thinking of how the term in spanish for "draft legislation" is "proyecto de ley." I wonder if there's some sort of calque that happened
13.10.2025 02:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I ask because in particular I suspect that no one centrally involved in a historical project would use that precise term to describe what it is they think they're doing. Or would they?
13.10.2025 02:22 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Maybe a silly question but when did "project" become the normative term for describing a (baggy?) sociohistorical process initiated and advanced by distinct actors with distinct goals (ie national project, racial project, settler colonial project, and so on)?
13.10.2025 02:22 β π 12 π 2 π¬ 3 π 0New at PB: As part of a series exploring higher ed under Trump, curated by @dennismhogan.bsky.social, @annaeclark.bsky.social discusses the way the Common Core failed usβand opened doors for Trumpβs direct attack on academic freedom and funding sources.
