Drawing on history, literature, urban studies and critical university studies, we will study the development of American higher education from colonial colleges to research universities to cities-within-cities. We will ask what it means to learn in these schools, to work in these schools, and to live in their shadow-what it means, in short, to be shaped by such institutions and to shape them in turn. We'll read canonical accounts of university life, encounter contemporary critics and examine the history of individual institutions through visits to the archives. We'll consider university connections to slavery and indigenous dispossession, campus protest and campus speech-on campus labor organizing and the establishment of ethnic studies-college sports, the political economy of the university-medical complex, and portrayals of Boston-area universities in fiction and film.
