Refugee status to be temporary as Shabana Mahmood rips up rules on UK asylum Home secretary announces 30-month protection limit, with refugees required to leave if their home countries are later judged safe

This policy is bad for community cohesion.

You don’t build confident, contributing neighbours on rolling 30 month visas. The current 5‑year route is how people plan for the future and fully join our communities.

The Danish model won’t work here.

Right moment for me to go to bed, after reading such takes as 'In international law it is not a war that is legal or illegal, but a country’s participation in it' or 'it is messier' whether the US/Israeli action is illegal under international law (compared to illegality under US domestic law)

UK will allow US to use bases to strike Iranian missile sites, says Starmer The prime minister says it remains the case that the UK will

β€œWhen I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, β€˜it means just what I choose it to mean β€” neither more nor less.” β€œThe question is,” said Alice, β€œwhether you can make words mean so many different things.” β€œThe question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, β€œwhich is to be master β€” that’s all.”

Well now that the UK is party to an illegal war, it is much more likely that its bases will be attacked...

I really don't understand why people struggle with the idea that it's bad to be able to kill whomever you want whenever you want just because you feel like it. That's actually the world you want to live in. You're quite confident about that vote for the leopards aren't you.

Starmer's ability to find the exact sweetspot which pisses off everyone is extraordinary. He's a savant.

As a tiny country, international law is all we've got. It's not a lot but at least it's something.
Ireland fails to defend it at its peril.

Asserting international law only when it is in your own/allies interest means not being committed to international law at all. Being dragged into a war by more powerful allies against direct interest and better judgement means having no strategic autonomy. The UK Govt is in a mess.

Service reminder: There is an Art 26 of the very constitution that he has sworn to uphold. Not saying that there are simple answers here, but a little bit more sensivity to the German constitutional imperatives on international law that capture lessons from history would be nice.

NEW: The Lib Dems are demanding MPs get a vote on allowing the US to use UK air bases.

Leader Ed Davey says:

β€œNo matter how the Prime Minister tries to redefine offensive as defensive, this is a slippery slope. He must not let Trump drag Britain into another prolonged war in the Middle East.”

Asylum policy in Denmark Politicians in the UK have expressed interest in Denmark's approach to granting asylum and the integration of refugees.

The Commons Library November 2025 report is a good factual briefing on what Danish asylum policy actually is

The Government seem to be saying these changes are the most significant overhaul in a generation (questionable). If that is the case, then it should send alarm bells ringing that such substantial changes can be done through changing the immigration rules, with no automatic parliamentary scrutiny.

"We're worried about the asylum backlog and also immigrants aren't integrating." Okay, then I guess make more administrative work for your department and also ensure every refugee knows that whatever they get up to here, they might be sent back in 30 months or less?

Who do they expect to buy this?

Under the new rules, asylum seekers' cases will be reviewed every 30 months, after which they could be sent to their country of origin, provided it is deemed safe to do so. There will be an exception for unaccompanied children.

Obvious by now but bears repeating: Labour's proposals across all forms of immigration policy are totally for public consumption. All signs point to them making worse the problems they allegedly solve

Keir Starmer is going to end up with his trademark u-turn here – where it becomes obvious to those paying attention it was entirely forced by backbenchers. So he gets no credit for the u-turn by people who wanted it, and attacked for dropping the policy by others.
