Today I finished the Dresden Plate quilt made
entirely out of used ties and old material gifted to me from my dearest friend Sylvia. She would have been so pleased.

I have finished the six inch Underground Railroad quilt top sampler. I’m very happy with the results. It’s off to the quilter. Then hopefully in a few weeks I can add the binding. Have a great day.

The North Star block is the 10th in the secret codes passed through history. It was the guiding light leading slaves to Canada and freedom.

Drunkard’s Path is the ninth quilt block. The slaves were to move in a staggering fashion even on occasion doubling back in order to confuse slave catchers.

The Birds in the Air quilt block gave directions for fugitives to travel. Deborah Coates designed the quilt and she and her husband ran Safe House #5 on the Underground Railroad.

The Bow Tie Quilt was the 7th to be displayed on the fence to direct the slaves to dress in a formal manner so they wouldn’t stand out among city folk. They could walk through town undetected to ships heading across the Great Lakes to Canada and freedom.

The Shoo-Fly block represents an actual person who might have helped escaping slaves. His responsibility was to secretly aid and harbour fugitives.

This is the fifth block in the Underground Railroad sampler quilt. It’s called the log cabin. The quilt may have indicated a specific log cabin that was a safe house or directed runways to build a cabin to weather out winter and establish permanent residency in a free area.

This is a sample of the crossroads quilt block, 4th in the series. The main crossroads or terminal was Cleveland, Ohio. 4 or 5 overland trails and numerous water routes crossed Lake Erie into Canada and freedom.

I thought I had better get on track with this quilt block. The 6” and 12” block of carpenters wheel finally finished except ironing. Ran out of the light blue so had to find a replacement. Swing low sweet chariot.
