Do Emmy nominations help a streaming show's viewership? Recent data from Luminate holds fascinating insights regarding whether or not Emmy nods affect a show’s audience size. Does anyone care about awards nominations when choosing their next binge watch? New data from Luminate is trying to answer that question. Luminate took a look at several series nominated for Emmy Awards in 2025, and found that while a nomination isn’t guaranteed to boost a show’s viewership, it can provide a huge boost to sagging audience numbers. Key Details: No Pitt of despair: Viewership for “The Pitt” surged after receiving Emmy nominations. Stretching its wings: “The Penguin” also saw viewership jump after its Emmy nod. Just for laughs: “Nobody Wants This” and “The Studio” each saw watching jumps of over 60% after being honored. Sign Up $9.99+ / month max via prime video While Luminate’s data doesn’t point to a conclusive link between Emmy nominations and more time spent watching nominated shows, receiving that honor surely didn’t hurt the HBO and HBO Max medical drama series “The Pitt .” According to Luminate’s numbers, daily minutes streamed of “The Pitt” jumped by more than 200% from the previous week following the release of Emmy nominations on July 15. No other major nominees saw a boost in viewership close to the level of “The Pitt,” which is why it’s hard to make a declarative statement that Emmy nods definitely drive more eyes to a given title. “The Diplomat” on Netflix saw the next-highest boost in viewership after receiving its nomination, getting a 42% increase in viewership. “Severance ” and “Paradise ” also saw increases, but other dramas “Andor ” and “The Last of Us ” saw viewership decline after the 2025 Emmy nominations dropped. The uneven effect that an Emmy nomination can have in renewing a show’s viewership can be seen across categories, as well. Luminate’s numbers show that “The Penguin ” saw a boost of over 100% to its viewership in the week following the release of Emmy nominations, the highest of any limited series. “Dying for Sex” and “Adolescence” also saw their watching minutes increase, but neither flew as high as “The Penguin” according to Luminate’s data. Netflix ’s comedy series “Nobody Wants This ” and “The Studio ” on Apple TV+ both saw jumps in viewership of over 60% after the nominations dropped, but other titles like “The Bear ” and “Hacks ” didn’t fare nearly so well. Summing up Luminate’s data, the conclusion could be that while an Emmy nomination can have an effect on viewers who were previously on the fence about watching a show or movie during its initial release window, it’s less likely to move the needle for viewers who have already made up their minds. That seems the most reasonable explanation for the high level of variance that an Emmy nod can have on a title’s viewership in the post-nomination landscape — at least to this analyst’s eyes. The USGA is reportedly closing in on new deal with NBC It appeared earlier this year that USGA events like the US Open could be leaving NBC, but a new report indicates a reunion is likely. As the USGA works through its latest round of broadcast rights deals, it’s beginning to appear that the golf governing body will be sticking with one longtime partner, despite an intriguing new suitor who unexpectedly entered the fray. According to John Ourand of Puck News , the USGA is “close to re-upping its rights deal with NBC” after several months of looking for a new potential ally for its rights. Key Details: No spinoff worries: The new deal between USGA and NBC would see USGA events stay on USA Network. Netflix lurking: Ourand reports that Netflix made a “serious bid” for the rights. Hefty raise: NBC could pay more than twice its current rate to keep USGA events. Sign Up $7.99+ / month peacocktv.com Per Ourand’s sources, a renewed agreement between NBC and the USGA would keep the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open on the NBC broadcast channel, as well as USA Network and Golf Channel . That news comes despite the decision by NBC’s parent company, Comcast, to spin off most of its cable channels into a new company called Versant. That decision led some analysts to wonder if sports associations would be hesitant to strike deals with the newly spun-off networks. Netflix circling Home Run Derby rights A new report indicates that Netflix is eyeing one of the key events in MLB’s All-Star Weekend, rights that were formerly attached to ESPN. As good a week as it was last week for Disney, this week is shaping up to be a disaster for its sports network ESPN . The channel could be set to lose another marquee sports property; according to a report from Bloomberg , Netflix is currently discussing a deal with MLB regarding the broadcast rights to the Home Run Derby. Key Details: Derby days: Bloomberg says that Netflix has eyed the Home Run Derby and perhaps other baseball programming. Do a split!: ESPN’s former MLB package looks likely to be split between multiple outlets. Philosophical fit: The Home Run Derby would fit with Netflix’s sports pursuit ethos. Sign Up $7.99+ / month netflix.com The report from Bloomberg indicates that the world’s largest streaming service has been in discussions with MLB about the Home Run Derby, but that it could also be interested in additional baseball programming. ESPN is the current rights holder for the annual summer event, but in February exercised its option to pull out of its deal with MLB three years early as a cost-cutting measure. ESPN’s tenure with MLB now expires following the end of the 2025 season. ESPN’s package of MLB events also includes rights to some playoff games, as well as the “Sunday Night Baseball” lineup of regular-season contests. The company had been paying $550 million per season for that lineup, but MLB is looking to boost those numbers in a marketplace where top sports leagues are seeing big increases in rights fees. It’s now appearing that ESPN’s package could be split among multiple new partners. At the end of July, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed that Apple and NBC had shown interest, and that ESPN had reached back out to discuss re-acquiring at least some of the rights. More recent reporting indicates that ESPN is in pursuit of local broadcast rights for some MLB teams. The Home Run Derby would seem to fit perfectly with Netflix’s philosophy regarding live sports . The streamer typically only pursues sporting events that it can turn into major viewing events, which is why a big, one-off broadcast like the Derby would be far more appealing compared to a package of regularly scheduled games that will cost more and feel less special. Paramount swoops in to lock up UFC rights in 2026 Starting next year, numbered UFC events and Fight Nights will stream on Paramount+ domestically. The new Paramount ownership group didn’t wait long to make a big splash in the sports arena. On Monday, Paramount announced a transformative deal to bring UFC fights to its airwaves in the United States, snatching those rights away from ESPN and giving its streaming service Paramount+ a new, premium event with which to lure customers. Key Details: Streaming and linear: Fights will be shown on Paramount+, with some simulcast on CBS. No more PPV: Paramount is eliminating the pay-per-view model that has traditionally accompanied UFC events. Goal achieved: UFC got a contract worth $1.1 billion annually, an important goal for the fighting league. Sign Up $7.99+ / month paramountplus.com While there had been discussion around whether ESPN would retain the mixed martial arts promotion’s rights, Paramount seemingly swept in out of nowhere to land UFC rights to claim them. UFC had been linked to other potential outlets like Netflix or Warner Bros. Discovery, but Paramount was seemingly too busy with complications stemming from its merger with Skydance Media to enter the fray. Just last week, the UFC’s Dana White dropped hints about the desire to grow the global audience of UFC, comments that seemed to point to Netflix as the next partner for the fighting league. But now, the deal between Paramount and UFC’s parent company TKO Holdings is done. Under the terms of the agreement, all numbered events and Fight Nights will stream on Paramount+, with some marquee events to appear simultaneously on CBS . The deal will start in 2026 and will last seven years. Until the end of 2025, UFC events will continue to air on ESPN platforms. The best news of all for fans of UFC events is that the fighting league will shift away from the pay-per-view model it has used on ESPN+ . Fights will be distributed to Paramount+ subscribers at no extra cost, marking a big departure from the previous formula in favor of attracting a larger audience to each fight. “I couldn’t be more excited to join forces with Dana, Ari, and Mark. Paramount+'s live stream of CBS is my favorite feature This stream is only available to select Paramount+ subscribers, but it’s the best thing the app does in my opinion. As will come as no surprise to readers, I have a ton of streaming subscriptions. Obviously, this is in part to keep up with the latest trends that audiences need to know about, but it’s also because I enjoy watching TV, and one of my favorite franchises to return to when I’m out of new titles to stream is Star Trek. That means I’ve got to have a Paramount+ subscription if I want to keep up, though I’ve been plenty critical of the Paramount+ user interface in the past. The deeper they dig, the more everything starts to unravel… from the murder of a local woman named Annie K. to the shady research being done at the Tsalal station. This season is just as much about grief, guilt, and what people do to survive in a place that feels like the end of the world. By the time the finale hits, Danvers and Navarro finally piece it together: Annie was murdered by the scientists when she got too close to exposing what they were doing, and a group of local women decided to take justice into their own hands by dragging the men out onto the ice and leaving them to freeze. Navarro gets a full confession from the last surviving scientist, then disappears into the wilderness, leaving Danvers behind to cover up what really happened. The show doesn’t tie everything up in a neat little bow, and that’s kind of the point. It ends on a quiet, eerie note — full of loss, maybe a little peace, and the sense that some things out there will never be fully explained. Who stars in ‘True Detective’? We don’t have casting details yet for “True Detective ” Season 5, but one thing’s for sure — it’ll be a whole new lineup. The best comedy on Apple TV+ you're (probably) not watching ‘The Afterparty’ is the genre-jumping murder mystery show you didn’t know you needed. Apple TV+ doesn’t have a massive comedy lineup, but when it hits, it really hits — and for my money, the most slept-on series in the bunch is “The Afterparty .” I’ve recommended this show to so many people because they had no idea it existed. It even landed at No. 1 on my list of the top 7 murder mystery comedies TV shows on streaming . So yeah, it’s one of the most creative takes on the murder mystery format I’ve ever seen. Every episode switches genres depending on the character’s point of view — rom-com, noir, musical, even a Wes Anderson-style episode — and the cast is stacked. Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, and Zoë Chao are all in top form. Despite even critics loving it, it never got the mainstream push it deserved. It’s created by Christopher Miller (who co-wrote “The Lego Movie ”), has Tiffany Haddish doing her thing as a laid-back detective, and somehow manages to blend comedy, murder-mystery, and film-nerd homage all in one go. Each episode is told from a different murder suspect’s point of view and shot in a completely different genre. So one’s a rom-com, another’s a found footage horror, another’s a slick action thriller — it’s total genre chaos, but in the best way possible. One reason I think it got kind of buried is that it got swallowed up by Apple TV+’s lineup. Shows like “Severance ” and “Ted Lasso ” got all the homepage real estate, and this quirky little murder-mystery series quietly fell off the front page. Which is wild, because it’s exactly the kind of show that streaming should celebrate: bold, weird, and fun to watch with friends. I mean, who doesn’t want a murder mystery where the noir episode has a voiceover and the musical episode has full dance numbers? Apple did try to market it in some creative ways (like releasing the pilot for free on YouTube and going all in on a TikTok music challenge), but it didn’t stick. The show never cracked the Nielsen Top 10 or built the kind of weekly buzz that something like “Only Murders in the Building ” did. The writing is tight, the cast is stacked (Sam Richardson and Zoë Chao are so good together), and even Season 2 somehow leveled up the concept without repeating itself. For a show that played with format that much, it’s kind of amazing how well it held together. That’s why this one stings a little. It was critically loved (90%+ on Rotten Tomatoes), had a unique concept, and managed to be both funny and genuinely twisty. But it got cancelled after two seasons, likely because not enough people even knew it existed. Which is why I keep bringing it up. Google TV operating system struggling to generate revenue A new report indicates that Google returned ad inventory to publishers, the latest sign that the company is struggling to monetize Google TV. The Streaming Wars are a well-known phenomenon, but the Operating System Wars have received far less attention from the public. They’re no less crucial to customers, however, as smart TV and streaming device OSs are the gateway to the content viewers love the most. Google TV is one of the operating systems trying to cement itself as a key player, but a new report from Janko Roettgers indicates that Google TV’s future is uncertain at best amidst choppy financial waters. Key Details: Take them back: Google is returning ad inventory to publishers instead of trying to sell that ad space itself. Large investment, small return: Google pours hundreds of millions into Google TV, but the return has been slight. Uncertain future: Some in the company are questioning the wisdom of investing in Google TV. Roettgers reports that last year, Google made a tacit admission that it wasn’t having a lot of success in selling advertising on the Google TV platform. For a long time, Google has required that publishers share a certain percentage of their ad inventory, allowing Google to sell that ad space itself and keep the money generated. But in 2024, Google suddenly changed those deals, sending the ads back to publishers and asking only for a chunk of the revenue generated instead. That move came even as Google began running full-screen ads on Google TV devices, essentially telling publishers that they were better at selling ads than Google was. It’s just the latest sign of Google’s struggles to monetize the Google TV platform, which the company spends hundreds of millions of dollars per year attempting to do. Google has yet to break even in those efforts, despite having over 270 million monthly active smart TVs and connected devices using the Google TV OS. Because it’s harder to monetize Google TV overseas, it’s crucial for the company to have a strong showing in the North American market. It’s harder to gain a foothold against large competitors like Amazon, however. In 2024, Amazon revealed that it would begin selling Hisense TVs with the Fire TV operating system at Costco, replacing Hisense-made TVs running the Google TV OS. Amazon outbid Google in the amount it’s willing to give Costco and Hisense every time a Hisense Fire TV sells, and many Google officials are wondering if throwing more money at the Google TV problem is really the answer. Those questions are growing louder in the wake of YouTube’s success; not only does YouTube continue to account for larger and larger portions of overall streaming viewing , but its ad revenue was $9.8 billion last quarter alone. Google is prioritizing YouTube over Google TV, and company officials are increasingly uncomfortable paying more and more to keep Google TV devices on retailers’ shelves. All of this adds up to a hard-to-discern future for Google TV. Netflix has indeed made major changes to its home screen, although it isn’t as apparent when you open the streamer first. The Continue Watching row is just a couple of clicks down from the top row, and after that, Netflix offers the standard curated rows of comedies, cooking shows, action thrillers, etc. The left-hand menu that has become so ubiquitous on streaming interfaces has now been moved to the top of the screen, and features just five main options: Search, Home, Shows, Movies, and Netflix. I liked the simplicity of the Netflix home screen more than I thought I would coming into the review. It’s not exactly revolutionary, but it does feel evolutionary, and that’s a start. Home screen score: 8 out of 10 Is content discovery easy on Netflix? The search icon on Netflix is right at the top of the screen, the first option in its top-row menu. That makes it easy enough to hunt down a specific show or movie that you’re looking for in its vast library. The real star of Netflix’s content discovery engine, however, is the curated row of titles that’s just two from the top on the home screen. For me, this row is labeled “Geeked: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Superhero & More,” which I must admit is at least a fair summation of the titles I watch most on Netflix. The row is stuffed with suggestions I’ve watched already (as a chronic re-watcher, I love this), as well as new shows I haven’t tried before. With fewer categories to narrow your search in the top menu, Netflix does lose a few points in this category, but the row of personalized recommendations right under the top carousel in the home screen adds a few of those back on, for sure. Content discovery score: 9 out of 10 Is it easy to move between categories on Netflix? Sure, if you don’t mind narrowing your browsing choices to just TV shows or movies. That’s really the bread and butter of the Netflix library anyway; the streamer doesn’t have daily live programming or any free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels yet, so there’s no real need for a Live tab.
