I asked my kiddo how he was doing, with all the election news and whatnot. He sat for a bit, and just asked “what are we going to do?” I couldn’t just dump all the bleak thoughts I’ve been having all day onto him, so I did my best to stay realistic and somewhat positive. I told him, “We don’t have enough money saved up to move to another country, but realistically we’ll be okay. We’re white, we live in a safe neighborhood, and we’re paying our bills. The people at the Hershey clinic have been great, and we still have a Democratic governor, so your gender care will likely keep going. We’ll have to do our best to listen to and support the people around us who aren’t in as stable of a position. We’ll need to be there for our LGBTQ and non-white friends. We’ll likely have to do a lot of work that should be done by the people in charge. It likely won’t be great, but we’ll do our best to get through it.” I can’t even fathom how kids his age are feeling that don’t have the full support of their family. I’m going to be cutting a lot of people out of my life in the next few weeks, but I hope I can also help build a support system for the people that will need it most of all, and become closer with them in the process.
