Actual children’s librarian here. The Hobbit is good for the the right kind of kid (though my pick would be the Gregor the Overlander or Rangers Apprentice series’). When kids ask about LOTR I say read the hobbit and watch the lotr movies (and then read the books if you really think you want to).
