THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

Attempted suicides, fights, pain: 911 calls reveal misery at ICEโ€™s largest detention facility The calls to 911 poured in from staff at Camp East Montana, the nation's largest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility, in its first months of operation in El Paso, Texas.

โ€œAt one point he said he overheard a security guard talking about bets made among the staff over which detainee would be next to die by suicide. The guard said he had paid $500 into a pool, with the total pot riding on the outcomeโ€

Under the chef Renรฉ Redzepi in Copenhagen, Noma became one of the worldโ€™s most famous restaurants. Former workers told The New York Times that its reputation was built on abusive working conditions that he inflicted on his staff, including violent punishments and psychological abuse. trib.al/rz2E9Nj

RIP to Jesse Jackson. His funeral is today. I wanted to share this clip from his appearance on Sesame Street in 1971. His important words ring just as true today as they did back then.

I'd say this sounds also like a useful corrective to the TV series set in more high end restaurants, which grapple with some of the brutality of restaurant work but also feature a lot of glossy food porn. Putting a hold on this (via @attackerman.bsky.social)

Got it. I'm sorry for your loss. To clarify: You want a eulogy for your father that's ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฒ, sounds ๐˜€๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜, and captures the ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—บ. I get it. He wasn't just your father โ€” he was your Dad. Here a few options I came up with:

Sedgwickโ€™s prescription is โ€œreparative reading,โ€ a theory of more flexible sense-making that can hold truth and provide an antidote to the overwhelming paranoia of our times. While the conventional wisdom states, โ€œJust because youโ€™re paranoid doesnโ€™t mean you donโ€™t have enemies,โ€ Sedgwick turns this formula on its head: โ€œJust because you have enemies doesnโ€™t mean you have to be paranoid.โ€ Or to put it another way, having a direct understanding of systemic oppression (the healthcare system, police violence, the fascist state) does not condemn a person to a categorically paranoid point of view. To practice a worldview more expansive and more open to possibilities than paranoia does not mean you have to deny the reality or gravity of oppression.

Feeling paranoid about stochastic violence and weaponized media? Me too. That's why I can't stop thinking about this incredibly helpful essay by @littlewow.online in @flaminghydra.com about the idea of "reparative reading" as a corrective to the "paranoid style." flaminghydra.com/issue-511/

Arizona numbers show massive decline in SNAP enrollment SNAP enrollment has fallen dramatically in Arizona in just three months, according to the latest state numbers.

โ€œโ€˜The caseload decline is driven in large part by the requirements in H.R.1, passed in July 2025, that changed SNAP eligibility and imposed new quality review requirements on states,โ€™ Brett Bezio, a DES spokesperson, told ABC15 in a statement.โ€

Today is the 3rd slopiversary of us having to temporarily close submissions. The problem of "AI"-generated submissions hasn't gone away and is still a huge waste of our time. House policy remains the same: #noAI stories, translation, art, or anything else.
