Hey, I'm Nikki. I work in higher ed and write dark smutty romance novels. I'm secretly three cats in a trench coat.

6:05am on Sunday and the Opalite music video is still nowhere to be found on YouTube. I'm so sorry Taylor Swift that I actually purchase music instead of streaming it.

If Trump or Vance or Musk do something that seems completely irrational to you, ask yourself β€œis this getting them more attention?”

If the answer is β€œyes” then actually it makes perfect sense.

And the answer will always be yes.

Indie authors and Amazon, artists and Etsy, etc etc

Feels annoying that I have to specify that from here on out, politicians need to have adult-level emotional regulation.

That is hilarious to me because ChatGPT is like three years old? Something like that. It's a toddler. No toddler is too big to fail.

Also don't forget that if you look back on your past work and DON'T think "wow I could do this so much better now" that means you're not growing, and that is bad. Finding flaws in your old work is supposed to be the natural order of creativity!

While it's useful to avoid settling or resting on your laurels, don't forget where you came from or completely belittle every single one of your past efforts.
Everyone has to start somewhere.
Rough drafts will make you cringe.
Flops will happen.
It's all part of the process of being an artist.

The idea that any genre is inherently better or worse than any other blows my mind. Everyone has different preferences and having lots of choices is a GOOD thing.

I have succumbed to the dark side. Remember me fondly?

I hate when someone is bragging about some great life hack they've discovered and it's just AI πŸ™„

If you’re in a creative field and you don’t lift up the work of your peers, you can’t expect people to care about your stuff

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like

Folks, you can't report the United States to its manager. There's no superhero coming to save us.

We don't need one giant act of heroism. We need millions of small acts of solidarity. Help one person in your community for nothing in return. Then, do it again. And again.

That's the revolution.

Conference organizers: If you want people who work outside of academia (or financially secure company), to give a talk at your conference bc you value their expertise, it's unreasonable to make them pay for registration. Artists/Nonprofit folks do not have the funding to pay you to share expertise.

This will go unstated during all the coverage of Tyler Robinson, but once again we have a case where the shooter was apprehended not because of the competence of the FBI or law enforcement, but because someone turned him in. The expensive and intrusive mass surveillance tools didn’t do a thing here.

The NRA buys off Congress. No action on guns.

The oil industry buys off Congress. No action on climate.

Insurance companies buy off Congress. No action on health care.

The list goes on and on.

Money in politics is the root of our dysfunction.

Theocracy is no friend of mine.
The fanatic, maniacal, anti-intellectual nature of Theism brings out the most obnoxious behavior in those who refuse to live by reason.

I know this won't happen anytime soon but the amount of spam we have to deal with every day is a public health crisis and should be treated such
