We're very excited to share some research news from IU Indianapolis's music therapy area.

A lot of my research integrates learning science and music technology pedagogy. The hard part is finding the right balance and way of presenting what are sometimes abstract concepts in a practical way.

I have no issue submitting elsewhere. I also don't disagree with many of the comments. It just feels like lazy editing. We do this in good faith and it feels somewhat dismissive not to find a compromise towards publication. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

I get that competitive journals don't have a lot of space. I'm puzzled by this one because it's not the first time it's happened, and I'm confused as to why they would reject the positive feedback and only focus on the new comments brought on by nitpicky reviewers. What am I missing here?

09.10.2025 14:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 1

We're coming up on a year of work. I'm not new to rejection. But I can't help but be frustrated. Stringing along R&Rs without a reasonable set of expectations is a waste of time. I've asked them to reconsider their decision. As an editor, I find R&Rs are generally a path towards publication. Odd.

After addressing a reviewer's concerns, that person somehow identified NEW issues as a result of what they asked me to change. So, the editors send out to a fourth reviewer, not familiar with the context, who wasn't happy. The journal rejects with no particular reason. I'm torn on this one for sure.

An article for a top journal goes through two rounds of revision. Each time, I responded to all of the comments and addressed concerns within word counts. After the first round, one reviewer recommended publication. After the second round, one brought up minor points. That's not where it ends.

Iโ€™ve got a forthcoming article on music technology and learning science using Digital Audio Workstations. Itโ€™s challenging trying to fuse these fields together, but rewarding.

Most likely. I addressed what I could and let the editors know about it. Doesnโ€™t bug me but thinking more about grad students and ECRs who might not bounce back from that.

Weird flex when a reviewer gets angry at writing style, but doesnโ€™t actually engage with the ideas in the paper. Thatโ€™s a new one for me.

Got my first desk rejection in almost a decade this week. While it's rare, they do happen from time to time. Sharing mainly to keep myself honest and dispel any notions that scholars don't hear the word "no" more often than not.

That is a passage by bell hooks in her great book Teaching to Transgress. I've been trying to keep from being cynical these days. Would much rather be a light than give into all of the negativity I see daily. I feel lucky to work with students. Maybe it's about being open and real, and learning.
