Caught three films over the weekend at the Cork French Film Festival.
LA VรRITร by Henri-Georges Clouzot was a revelation with regards to Brigitte Bardot, an absolutely stellar performance in a dramatic role.

Totally hooked on this series.
I was a fan of Cork author Catherine Ryan Howard from the very beginning.
The series differs quite a bit from her novel but all the changes actually make sense in the context of this adaptation.
And, yes, I may have developed a little crush for Dove Cameron.

Edwige Fenech with shoulder-length auburn hair sits barefoot on the ground beside large terracotta plant pots and leafy greenery. She leans against a light-colored wall, wearing a patterned robe or shawl draped loosely around her shoulders, revealing a red garment underneath. She looks toward the camera with a calm, slightly pensive expression in a relaxed outdoor setting.

Horror film poster for The Stylist. A close-up of a womanโs face lit in cold blue tones, staring directly at the viewer. The right side of her face is streaked with dripping red blood. She holds a pair of hairdressing scissors close to her eye, suggesting a threatening or obsessive tone. The film title โTHE STYLISTโ appears in bold red letters at the bottom.
Proof if any was needed that films don't need a huge budget to look super stylish. After this production will definitely check out more by @jillsixx.bsky.social

1917 illustrated poster for Das indische Grabmal by Thea von Harbou. Stylized artwork shows two men riding an elephant, one reclining in colonial attire and the other seated upright. Bold decorative patterns in orange and yellow frame the elephant. Text reads โNeuester Roman von Thea von Harbouโ and references the 1918 volume of Gartenlaube.
Vintage German book cover of Das indische Grabmal by Thea von Harbou. Yellow border with red band reading โRoman von Thea von Harbouโ and a small โ1 Markโ price badge. The central black-and-white film still shows a man in a suit facing a woman in a sheer, ornate dress who touches his lapel; a statue stands in the background. โUhlen-Bรผcherโ appears along the bottom.
Two images for Thea von Harbou's novel "Das indische Grabmal" (The Indian Tomb): the first showing an advertising from 1917 promoting the serialised print in the magazine "Die Gartenlaube" in 1918; the second a book version coinciding with the second film adaptation from 1938.

Totally agree. This is the first time I am getting this. I am very thankful for the chance to get auto translated subtitles when necessary but auto dubs are cringe. This was a video that interested me but that I also wanted to use to practice my Italian comprehension.

WTF? Just started watching an Italian language YouTube video and it was auto dubbed into English! Not impressed.
If you want to give me choice, sure bring it on.
Make it default and require me to change the settings, then kindly please fuck off.

Vintage-style promotional graphic for the old-time radio series Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar (1955โ1960). On a bright red textured background, a large tilted title card reads โYours Truly, Johnny Dollar 1955โ1960 Old Time Radio.โ At top left is a small black-and-white portrait of Bob Bailey with the text โBob Bailey stars in.โ On the right, an illustrated noir detective in a trench coat and fedora holds a revolver. On the left, a silhouetted woman stands in profile, and a chalk outline of a body appears near the bottom center. Text also reads โProduced and Directed by Jack Johnstoneโ and โEazyโs Old Time Radio,โ with a small Hartford logo in the upper right.
Listening to some eps of YOURS TRULY, JOHNNY DOLLAR. It's been a while since I last came across an insurance investigator as the hero of a crime story or thriller. It used to be a wonderful trope. Totally bonkers of course: Take a job with a dull public image and turn it into an action packed story.

The Red Army Faction on the screen
The Baader Meinhoff aka Red Army Faction on film. Either direct depictions, documentaries or fictional takes that talk about the milieu that influenced them.
My latest @letterboxd.social list is on one of my current obsessions, the Baader Meinhoff aka Red Army Faction on the screen. Direct depictions, documentaries or fictional takes that talk about the milieu that influenced them. Turns out there's far more than I thought

Spot on. I rarely every read samples of a book when it sounds interesting but given recent experiences I'll need to check out a few pages prior to purchase from now on. Had hoped for a quiet night's reading but just ended up annoyed and still haven't even started a book I genuinely want to continue

First person present is the worst!!! In the last hour I gave up on two recent crime novels just two or three chapters in as I couldn't handle the third person present style of writing. And I'm the kind of person who rarely ever gives up on a book but just couldn't hack it. It was such awful writing

That mirrors what I noticed. Yes, when done well it can add immediacy but most times I just don't find it's done well and just sounds awkward.

Is it my imagination or are more books these days written in the present tense than ever before? Cause apart from one or two notable exceptions I absolutely loathe that style of writing instantly. I find it unreadable for a work of fiction.
