Britain’s β€˜open’ voters need a champion Despite their triumph in Gorton, it’s not clear the Greens have what it takes to prevent a Reform victory at the next election

This week's column: the Green surge is in part because Labour consciously decided they didn't want the votes they got in 2024:

New 🏭: The price of natural gas in Europe has surged almost 80% since Friday after Iranian strikes on the world's second-largest exporter Qatar and the effective closure of key shipping routes... But zooming out, we're still a long way from the 2022 price crisis

Also in general quite striking just how far apart SW1 and public opinion are. This is a war that 28 per cent of people 'support'!

The implicit argument of so much of this stuff is that there is no legitimate role for Muslims in public life.

Burnham, by virtue of being a potential leadership challenger, was the only candidate lab could have chosen that had some chance of dissuading anti incumbent voters. Narrative is still really important and he had a good one.

Andy Burnham would probably have won, and maybe the mayoralty by-election could have been a narrow win for labour too... but no

The inevitable pivot back to 'labour is the only progressive choice' comms at the next GE is going to be very hard. People don't forget this stuff being the only thing they ever hear about what the government is doing.

The bad thing about this happening in a Labour seat is it gives the press a big excuse to ignore the fact Reform’s strategy is failing. They’ve now lost 3 in a row in 3 different countries to 3 different parties because their plan of coming through a split vote isn’t working. Their vote is too low

Oxford Street pedestrianisation plan gets final official approval The mayor of London says details about when the changes will be introduced are to be released soon.

The mayor has instructed Transport for London to implement proposals to remove traffic from Oxford Street between Great Portland Street+Orchard Street, following a second consultation on local traffic diversions in which 2,700 people responded. City Hall said most were in agreement with the plans.

This whole exchange is excruciating, and a good example of how someone who is honed on debating on twitter comes across using the same techniques on mainstream platforms. Talking over the most trusted man in Britain and seeing him as part of a left wing establishment conspiracy... nuts.
