One unintended thing this graph shows is how increasing the number of cases makes more stable measures. The first dot is for age 0, since the first year has a high death rate, it works well at measuring the death rate of our young. This one is just under 200 which means Alabama's death rate is close to twice as high as New York state's.

Oh, I didn't start noting that the reason I am comparing these two states is I keep hearing Alabama political leaders putting New York down and ending with I am glad to be in Alabama.

Next are three dots that are farther apart than the later ones. This is because I used age groups for these very young because the single year age mortality data does not have enough cases to allow the Bureau of Vital Statistics to release data. Once the increase in numbers with age provide enough cases, I shift to single year data for up to age group 85+.

One major thing to notice is that vertical difference between consecutive measures gets smaller with age. This is due to death rates increase with age and this increase in numbers works just like increasing sample sizes in data, variation decreases.

The second thing to notice is that the center of the line of dots also slowly moves down and gets below 150 at age 85 and that large age 85+ group at the end is down to 123%.

Here is the data producing the graph:

Look at changes for ages 16 through 19 and then for the 80's.

Here I compare 2023 detailed age death rates in Alabama with the same death rates in New York. The purpose of this graph is to discuss several things that higher versus lower death rates cause. The displayed data are at the end. πŸ§ͺπŸ’‘β˜ οΈ #Sociology #Population #NewYork #Alabama
