This study highlights that using single species for ecosystem monitoring may be biased by the ecological behaviour of the monitor species, which can overshadow ecosystem response to environment. A multispecies approach is better suited for ecosystem level monitoring

However, anthropogenic drivers (hydropower water-level regulation and lake catchment modifications) induced near identical isotopic responses! This may indicate a lack of ecological adaption to these novel environmental changes in these salmonid species.

Examining nine different potential drivers simultaneously, we find that biotic and 'natural' abiotic drivers elicit species-specific responses, highlighting how predator-driven ecological responses to environment can dominate over expected bottom-up driven changes in lake ecosystems.

To answer this, Antti Eloranta @uniofjyvaskyla.bsky.social brought together over a dozen ecologists who have worked on Fennoscandian lakes in the past twenty years. We focused on isotope measurements from salmonid fishes as generalist integrators of ecosystem energy flows.

Many small-scale studies have shown lots of biotic, abiotic, and anthropogenic factors influence cold-water lakes. But these factors do not act in isolation, so what is their relative importance on energy flows through these ecosystems?
