On the right are terrestrial mammals where there is an additional ion channel isoform, the delta isoform, that is open under high salt concentrations. This is hypothesised to function as a potential “stress” protein for monitoring high salt levels that has secondarily been lost in marine mammals.

New paper alert! Was great to contribute to work of @mikealthaus.bsky.social and colleagues demonstrating how re-entering the marine environmental led to the evolutionary loss of the high concentration "stress" signalling sodium ion channel isoform in mammals!

I really appreciate this holiday in Finland - chilling with friends and family, and enjoying the longest day of the year! A very earthly thing to celebrate.

Sad to say that my RCF fellowship, which would have involved lots of isotope ecophysiology experiments, was not funded. It's difficult not to take it a bit personally, but it always surprises me how different proposal reviews can be (i guess like with papers its quite the lottery in the end)
