Follow up: I read them... Aside from the typical few annoyed/angry students, the things the students disliked I already knew about and planned to change. I don't like numerical ratings at all. The written feedback was mostly helpful and positive. The strongly negative feedback wasn't actionable.

Should I read my course evaluations? I work really hard, and I think I'm ok/good at my job. I'm learning that I cannot please everyone AND students are SO hurtful on course evaluations. Like not helpful, critical feedback, just mean.

Nothing makes me want to quit my job more than student evaluations - except Rate my Professors. It's gross. Like I'm working my butt off every single day and I KNOW nobody would say those things about a male professor.

I'm playing a grading game. For every not good paper I have to grade another one til I find a good paper. For every good paper, I keep grading because hopefully the next one will be good too! #academia

I wonder if students even think their professors are people with feelings or if they feel nothing when the they trash us online... Seriously.

Anyone had success creating data sets (for practice!) using AI?

I'm starting to plan a data literacy unit and have students create data sets to use for their future problem sets. inexperienced to use publicly available data.

I have a good mix of first years through fourth years. I expect them to be able to articulate a question they're interested in. With all the ways to communicate and collaborate they should be able to compose a single sentence about their topic. :(

Oh! Sorry let me be more specific. They can pick a *broad* topic, but they cannot specify a research question. For example: their topic is families & mental health, but they cannot narrow it from there! They have great ideas but can't work together to be specify what about the topic interests them.

Yes! I have some parts of the project that are individual with class time to come together. Lots of variety! Still they cannot meet a simple deadline to pick a topic!!

Interesting! I typically have students brainstorm topics and then group by shared interests. This could be interesting to try next time. My students are largely commuters but with texting, email, Zoom, collaborative docs, etc. I didn't expect them to find it so difficult to collaborate.

I have groups do an agreement and check in partway so we eliminate the free-rider problem. It's not perfect but it helps. I also teach hybrid/asynchronous so ideally they'd use the asynchronous weeks for the project - that's why I decided to teach it this way. To alleviate the scheduling probs. 🤷🤷

A colleague suggested not doing group projects bc students can't align their schedules & they're too busy. I already have them work in small groups for activities & I cant give up more class time for group projects during class. Thoughts?
