Physicists hope to probe standard model with misshapen radium monofluoride Effect never observed in a molecule could help adjudicate between competing models of nuclear structure

Radium monofluoride could help physicists investigate the standard model, owing to radium-225's unusual pear-shaped nucleus.

me: yeah, so it turns out you can't really turn lead into gold
medieval alchemist: Ah, oh well.
me: we can turn coal into diamonds though
medieval alchemist: what.

I've come to realize that most of my activity here is quite negative πŸ₯² My life isn't all doom and gloomy, just the career-searching part of it. I get to hang out with my dogs in-between my part-time work shifts. I'm persisting.

The current job market for science and research is absolutely depressing. I've been applying since December. With my specific research/career interests, it just seems like there's no way to land anything without a higher degree - not even guaranteed to get because of funding cuts. Awful all around.

Vaccine triggers fierce response to fight brain tumor Β» McKnight Brain Institute Β» University of Florida UF-developed mRNA vaccine quickly reprogrammed the immune system to attack glioblastoma.

Five years ago, a very close relative died of a glioblastoma brain tumor at the age of 13. Today would have been his 19th birthday. And now comes news that an mRNA vaccine is being trialed to treat this very (incurable) malady. Fingers crossed.

Abandoning the vision of liberal arts education is at the heart of how fascism has come knocking.

Scientists speaking of abandoning humanities have not learned the core lessons of our history - and by our history I even mean THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE. Science is never separated from society.

Academia is so funny. You read enough papers and you start recognizing names. You notice the beef between scientists. You start looking at some as celebrities. ESPECIALLY in some more niche divisions. Very silly despite all the anguish.

Thank you πŸ«‚ Really trying to push through it and continuing to apply to stuff. I'm also limited by where I can work due to needing to be near my specialists, so that cuts off a lot of opportunities.

I haven't had a single interview and I've been applying since the end of December. There was a job that I thought I was sure to get, and was super interested in, but I got a rejection last week for it 🫀 no feedback either.

Job market is rough, as you all know. If you have any leads on jobs in the Philadelphia area (closer to the city, the better. I depend on public transit). Please let me know if there's any opportunities like this. Looking for work in radiation safety, radiochemistry research, radiology research, etc

Today, after a difficult four years, I'm graduating with my bachelor's in chemistry, cum laude. I've made it through a concussion and various mental and physical health challenges but I made it. I'm a first-gen, disabled, queer student graduating from an Ivy League. My heart is full.
