If you get really good at forgetting, you can get excitement out of putting a bunch of things in your Amazon cart, then wandering off and totally blanking on it, only to return later to experience the joy of taking things out of your cart you don't need, saving some of your money from going to Bezos

Kids deserve functioning belief systems built on ethics and humans working to understand each other, not baggage weighing them down from day one.

I think forcing your fashy belief system on a kid can really put an unfair burden on that child, as the kid's gotta do a lot of work to untangle as much of it as possible while simultaneously growing up. Asking a kid to clean up your cognitive errors because you choose to be an unempathetic asshole.

This doesn't mean forgoing justice or consequences. However, it does lead me to strongly disapprove of things like police brutality, striking disobedient children or rowdy pets, extreme punishments done for public spectacle, etc. Raging, impulsive revenge can easily compromise proportionality.

As part of my humanist principles, I specifically include the ideas that everyone deserves the chances to improve themselves, contribute to society, and tell their story. Someone else's right to reasonable self-defense can take priority, but I see problem solving as best done with minimal violence.

The thing about "you seem like someone pissed in your cheerios" is that small quantities of fresh pee smell kind of like cheerios and have a tangy, milky flavor that would probably blend with milk... So a little urine in a bowl of cheerios might not even be that noticeable...

I also keep hoping they'll be galvanized into actually becoming leftish rather than centrist after seeing what drifting to the right leads to, but who knows. There's so many powerful assholes and AIPAC money recipients who would need to be displaced (unless they can magically change themselves)

Democrats often seem to prefer conceding and compromising to avoid disruption and inconvenience, but this Administration guarantees nonstop painful messes regardless of whether Dems give in on budget. I hope they hold firm on the budget. It'll get ugly, but, what won't? Especially right now...

i used to prefer android because it gave me at least a bit of control over my device and was linux-like. that era is gone (because cell providers, phone vendors, and google all want to charge extra for Basic-Functionality-as-a-Service rather than let me have the privileges to manage my own device!)

@developers.google.com why can i, as a phone user, not set my device to automatically rename apps? e.g. i'd like to override the system apk installer behavior to use my own app icon names for certain app identifiers. i ought to be able to just maintain a table which is used for automatic renaming.

the fact that i have to have multiple MFA apps on my work phone all called "Authenticator", discernible only by their icons (which periodically change, probably for "brand refresh" reasons), feels ableist. like, my visual processing is a little weird. i can't imagine if my vision was impaired too!

i grow weary of a world where i'm seen as anything from a nuisance to a threat while dealing with a constant barrage of demands and overwhelming stimuli, especially since i'm bad at maintaining bonds with others and struggle to be competent enough to feel like i make a positive difference, you know?

I think more clear emphasis might be needed on the dialog. The second woman is surprised to hear gay acceptance mentioned. My idea is a misunderstanding-because-of-unstated-assumption sketch basically

Imagine being in one of the parallel universes whose history matches a fictional narrative in this universe. Now imagine being in one of the universes matching by the events of a D&D game... which becomes abandoned. So your universe suddenly becomes just like... philosophical zombies, everyone...

"One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we've been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back."
- Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

I'm envisioning this as the ending to a skit where the second woman is an older neighbor that the first woman's daughter isn't sure would be accepting

The resurgence of McCarthyism makes it less entertaining, though.

"You know, it's great, your daughter being so open like that."

"I know. I'm so proud of her."

"Just living her life, unafraid of judgment. People like her will really advance the world."

"I'm glad to hear you're an ally."

"Ally? Sure let the gays be happy! I mean, it's great she's a commie!"
