Rock-cut tombs in the necropolis of Şanlıurfa, carved below Urfa Castle. These date to the Hellenistic and Roman periods but are part of a region with human activity dating back tens of thousands of years. Şanlıurfa lies in the northern arc of the Fertile Crescent, an area central to early human settlement. Just outside the city is Göbekli Tepe, a Pre-Pottery Neolithic ritual complex dated to around 9600 BCE—currently the world’s oldest known monumental architecture.

Founded in 397 AD in Tur Abdin (SE Turkey), it’s the oldest surviving Syriac Orthodox monastery.

Built with support from Roman emperors, it became a major center for theology, translation, and monastic life—housing over 1,000 monks by the 6th century.

Its architecture blends Roman, Byzantine, and Mesopotamian styles, including one of the region’s earliest domed churches.

It survived Mongol invasions, Kurdish raids, and the 1915 Sayfo genocide and is still active today.

Saint Hilarion Castle in Northern Cyprus began as a 10th-century Byzantine monastery and was later fortified to defend against Arab raids. It was expanded by the Lusignans during the Crusader period and became a royal residence and part of the island’s mountain defense system. Crusaders used the castle strategically, and it later passed into Venetian control before being abandoned in the 16th century. The castle is often linked to the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle

The Frauentor (“Women’s Gate”) in Nuremberg was built around 1320 as part of the city’s expanded fortifications. It was named after the nearby St. Clara Monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and home to a Franciscan order of nuns. The gate was a key entrance through the second city wall until its demolition in the late 19th century. Today, its legacy lives on in Frauentorgraben and the Handwerkerhof, a medieval-style artisan market.
