To get ahead of discourse: If Kyler Murray had gone to MLB instead of the NFL, he’d probably still be under club control right now.

Instead, he has had a not all that great NFL career and has already made more money than all but 55 players in MLB history.

He obviously made the right choice.

c) was taken out in the 9th but put into right field

d) brought back in

I finish evenings with my boys asking them to tell me good things that happened during the day, good things that they did, and things about themselves that they recognize they love. It’s incredible how empowering it is to have permission to look for the good things. Because they’re there too.

It’s unbelievable how amazing the human mind is at pattern recognition… and if you train it to look for the good things, you find them more often. (Like seeing black ford fusions when you drive one.)

Our brains love a task and it’s even better if it’s repeatable.

So where the combine actually matters is in the draft. That’s where the NFL stops lying and tells us what they believe in when it comes to players. And the combine is baked into that draft analysis.

So as much as it stinks, we’ll find out what mattered at the combine in April, at the draft…

Unfortunately, the NFL is notably Neanderthal. Many teams use analytics nerds as the butt of jokes at best and as pocket-protected scapegoats at worst.

And the NFL has the final say. They make the picks. They fill the rosters. They put the players on the field. (Often to the detriment of the team)

A lot of metrics analysts who use advanced statistics and regression analysis and the Pearson correlation coefficient are brilliant. And a lot of you spend time poring over data to see if there’s any signal— any way we can gain an advantage parsing out who will actually produce at the next level.

I have a grievance about combine takeaways from the fantasy football community… but it’s not necessarily what you think…

I think that a lot of number-crunchers actually find actionable information from combine data. It’s obviously deeper than “fast wide receiver go brrrr”
